I can't imagine what it would hurt but figured I should check... basically I want to cut it about 4-6" behind the muffler...

These are some old pics but you get the idea...

Mine goes from the mufflers into turndowns. No problems with my tbi 350, headers, no cats, and about 4 feet of pipe from the headers to the mufflers.

Only thing you need to consider is the flow of the exhaust gasses after they exit.

Let me relate a story, While mudding a truck got stuck, he was the fifth guy that got stuck and we were working on getting the other trucks out( it was dark and early October). So a little cool outside. He left his truck idleing with his wife and 4 yr old girl in the truck no big deal.

His exhaust was cut just after the mufflers the combination of being stuck and having a full bed the carbon monoxide built up under the truck. We were slogging over to another truck with the strap and his wife starts screaming, their little girl had quit breathing. We gave her CPR and she started breathing again. She was fine and so was his wife.

With your lack of bed you should be fine, mine dumps about a foot behind the cab and I have been fine but unless your exhaust is all the way behind the truck, if you are stuck in sand or mud to the point where there is not much airlow under your truck keep your windows down while idleing.

My question is, Why?? You would only be cutting 16" off or so. I don't remember you ever saying it hit or got in the way.

I don't have anything after my mufflers. It's loud, but sounds sooooo good with the big block. Because the truck is lifted, there is hardly any reverb's inside the truck. Don't get the drone while cruising at a steady speed.

a turndown after the muffler is all you really need, unless it will not pass inspection that way.i know some states require the exhaust to exit behind the rear axle.

I've run turn-downs on my hot rods in the past and prefer full pipes due to the resonance factor.

Wow, that would be a terrible situation but like you said with me being bedless I think I'll be ok in that regard.

I'm planning on having my exhaust completely re-worked eventually and going to a stainless setup to help keep the pismo rust away but for the time being I was thinking of trimming it up. When we're bouncing through the dunes I've looked back before and it's shaking all over the place because I cut the furthest mount off when I did my rear suspension (it was a part of the old bump stop bracket). There are two straps directly on the muffler so I think if I cut all the extra pipe off the back it might stay in place a little better.

I would keep it. I think your setup that makes it to the rear axle is smog legal in ca, cutting/dumping it sooner would not be.

I have basically exactly what you want to do Avery. Works out great, except my leaf spring, brake and wheel are covered in soot (it's a diesel). even with "clean" gasser exhaust, you will never keep that wheel clean.

I had a 89 mustang with turndowns right after the mufflers, So a good ways before the axle. Never had an issue with smog places

I forget where i heard it, but maybe that rule is for trucks.

I (think) ive heard that as far as not having it come out before the axle.... but it was concerning having a pipe with it coming out the side

Most likely to keep people next to you at stoplights from having exhaust in there window. But i guess that could happen depending on were they were next to you if it came out behind the axle too...

who knows!

Been running mine like that for about 3 years, right after the muffler they turn toward the outside and are cut off inside of the rear leaf springs at the front shackle.

Can get fumey if idling in place for extended periods but then I have a soft top or no top.
