Any reason to stay away from 88-98 1tons as donors?

I've been looking for a donor truck for my crew cab project. So far I've been trying to find a cucv or older 1 ton because of the axles. But I want overdrive, FI, and such. So I was wondering if theres any reason I cant put the engine, tranny, possibly Tcase, and rear end of a mid 90's 3500 truck into a square body. Then find a D60 for the front separate. I know the tcase is wrong side drop. just didnt know if it was clockable or if getting a drivers drop d60 would work.

I do know that people like the 4l80. I dont even know what tcase comes in them:dunno: and a FI454 would be awesome.

If this seems like a stupid question I apoligize in advance, any help is greatly appreciated:bow:

Not stupid at all...

I'd definitely not count out a newer 1 ton as a donor rig. You can use the engine, transmission and rear axle out of one no problem. Finding the Ford D60 you'd need to use the newer transfer case is not as easy as you might think. I'd swap in an older NP208 or pass side drop NP241 to replace the transfer case that comes in the IFS rigs. They are 32 spline 6 bolt pattern just like the older transfer cases.

Basically just need a transfer case and Chevy D60 to make it work nice in your truck

If you wanting to get a FI454 look for a 96-98. The Gen VI MPFI motor is so much better than the Gen V TBI. The throttle body may be simpler to swap, but if you have a full donor I think the extra power would be worth the work.

In addition to that the rear axle is wider so I think it makes the trucks look better

I would look newer for the trans motor and rear end for sure Rick

some of the 3500's didnt have the 4l80 right?? or did it come standard. Is that tranny even worth it or should I stay in the th400 realm and forget OD. I want to be able to drive my truck from trail to trail with decent abitlty, and still be strong enough to beat the snot out of it if need be. I'm really just getting a direction right now. I need a second vehicle thats winter capable so I thought.... Donor rig:whistle: then I can tear it apart next summer:D. 87-91's are hard to find:confused: thats why I wanna go newer if I can.

I found a 95 regular cab srw 3500 with 114000mi for $2700. I dont know the specifics yet. I gotta call tomorow

The '96 we did the R and D for our SAS kit on has a Turbo 400. FI454 and a dana 70 in the rear.

dana 70? I guess that makes sense. I figured 14b, but dana will work.

My '98 cc dually had a borgwarner in it. It was pretty beefy, like a nvg241 I'd say. IIRC it was a 1440 bw. It was on the back of the nv4500 behind the "vortec 7.4L" 454. Was a pretty sweet drivetrain if you could stomach the mpg.

sas would be the better route:thinking:. then I still would have to figure out what to do to the crew to make it run better and more reliable:doah:

Seen the borgwarner in them myself.

I helped scrap a 97 GMC 3500. it had the Borg/warner 1354 Tcase, which as I remember is an oddball. it had the 4l80 and a 6.5TD

I just pulled the 6.5 turbo diesel/NV4500 5 speed out of my 94 K2500 to put in my 78 K5. Swapping out the t-case for a passenger drop one and a conversion bell housing for the clutch. After that it's just a few minor things. Mine is a bit more complicated, due to the diesel part.
