I`m swapping in my 3/4ton axles this weekend, 10b, 14bsf. I`m using 15"ers, but I have already done the grinding on the front for the wheels.

I`ve made a list of what has to be done for the most part, so I can go step by step, as this is my first full axle swap.

Front:
- unbolt draglink from steering arm
- unbolt shocks on axle end
- drill out yoke to fix hole with broken stud (discussed in another thread)
- remove driveshaft (axle end)
- remove brake lines
- remove u bolts
- pull out
- reverse

Rear:
- brakelines
- shocks
- d shaft
- put in conv. joint
- u bolts
- pull out
- reverse

Am I missing anything?

It will be me and my buddy doing this, and we both have enough knowledge to do so. Any guesses on how long it will take us?

Just curious, because we`re getting hit with 6-9" of snow tonight, and the swap is going down in the driveway. He lives in NH, but he can come down with his father who still works down here. So he can come down friday morning till 2, then pretty much all day Saturday. Any idea? Just trying to think if I should just have him come Saturday, and Friday I`ll clean up, snowblow, etc, and clear it out as best I can.

Today I plan on getting all the tools ready to go, so there`s no time wasted searching, not to mention the added aggrivation. I`ll get everything set, sockets for u bolts, shocks, etc..wrenchs for brake lines, etc...

TIA!

If everything is ready to go 2 guys should be able to knock that out in half a day. But if your luck is like mine, take whatever your current estimate is, add time for at least one parts run for a part that you don't have or will break, and then double the entire estimate.

Well, it often is. I`m hoping that having everything set to go will prevent said bad luck:crazy::D

Don't forget time for adjusting drums, bleeding brakes, tapping out damaged, corroded threads, wire wheeling hardware, alignment, etc.

Start spraying WD-40 on everything now so its easier then!

Are your new axles ready to go? Bearings adjusted? Greased? Hubs installed?

The axles are all set to go. They`re going from one truck right into another one.

I`m thinking maybe I should just have him come down Saturday. Today I`ll get all the tools ready, then tomorrow as soon as the snows cleared, I`ll start taking stuff off...shocks, d shafts, etc...that should save even more time on Saturday.

You guys will be fine... I did my axle swap by myself and I did the rear end one day and ran to work/school that week then did the front end the next weekend...
I ran into a lot more problems w/ my front end (forgot to snag the brakeline block that attaches the brakeline to the back of the calipers, had issues w/ the steering arm; but you probably aren't swapping arms, and other various stupid stuff :))

Well, I got everything all set. Tools, etc. Even wrote down what size everything was:D Got it all in a little tool tray. Finish just in time, as snows starting to fall now:eek1:

Awesome man! Thanks for the offer. I`ll definitely keep that in mind.

I'll probably mention it in NEK5 but we should set up a post chrstmas wheeling trip some where around eastern mass, if theres a place to do it. Now that I finally have my truck up and running again all my friends either blew theres up or sold them.

and yes I am a hyjacker:doah:

youre going to have to adjust for pinion angle most likely then do you really need to remove front brake lines? cant you jsut hang the calipers out of the way? might wanna replace your centering pins on your springs too. i did my axle swap in three days over spring break.

Any reason?

Well, I`m switching to an 8 lug axle, 10b, so the calipers are different, no?

did that when the zero rates went in:D

nope... I run "1/2 ton" calipers off my 6 lug 10b on my "3/4 ton" 8 lug 10b...
I see. So they`re the same? I have problems with one of my calipers sticking, so I might as well replace them...

Sticking caliper is more than likely the little slider pins has some rust on it. When you unbolt the caliper, check the bolt, if it has some rust, or some mud buildup, that was probably the cause. And there are 2 different kinds of calipers, supposedly they have different size pistons, but they work interchangeably.

the 14b sf most likely has different spring perches angles for a longer wheelbase truck. whered it come from.

if its going in a k5 and came from a longbed there is a 9* difference

Hmm. I`ve never heard that before. They came from an 84 burb.

Every project I estimate the time for is 20 minutes. Standard rule of thumb!:haha:

i hadnt either, i swapped in an axle set from a longbed and had to shim it 9. i dont know for sure if there is that much of a difference or even if im going crazy. its a possibility though.

I did think you had to do any grinding with the 3/4 ton axles (calipers) same as the 1/2 ton ones 15' should bolt right on.
