Attempting to replace wiring in 85 gmc jimmy today. It’s my first time and this seems like a daunting task. Any tips? Wish me luck.

Take your time. Double check before cutting any wire.
Make sure you have the shrink tube on the wire before crimping the terminal.
My future wiring, additions will have clear shrink tube with a label maker label underneath near terminal ends.
Come back with specific questions, we will do our best to answer.

Factory wiring diagram and a prescription for 20 hours of YouTube videos before hand. Lol

My 68c10 wasn’t bad but it didn’t have many circuits. I also started with nothing, not trying to save anything.
The blazer had more circuits and it was a universal fuse/ harness. That was tough and I tried to save a lot of stuff on the truck. Eventually I stripped most everything out as the truck evolved/un-evolved/devolved and made my own set up for the circuits I wanted.

Is the painless harness an exact replica of the factory harness. If not then I would not use it.

Patience and double checking. Any of the better name aftermarket will work. Colors may be different from factory. Take your time. Lay the hole thing out and familiarize yourself with what goes where. Finish a pull to where it needs to go before staopping for a break. The Painless and Easywire brands have each wire marked for what they feed. Do not get in a hurry. Keep the wires from crossing. Walk away if you get frustrated. Do not let them loop or kink as you pull them through a hole. It really is not a big deal. Solder connections when you can.

Do you get the drift of the post?

I would rather do a full new rewire than deal with old and PO wiring any day. I never kept track, but I would bet I have fully wired over 40 cars. The last 5 with a premade harness. So much easier that pulling your own harness together from spools.

I wimped out and paid a shop to install the American autowire 69-72 c10 in my '69. I don't have the patience or know-how to wire a vehicle. For me, it was worth the $$ to pay a professional to do it, some may and will disagree but that's ok.
