previous po's manual glow plug job just shit the bed and the wiring is so jacked up everywhere else I'm having a hell of a time tracing stuff back, just need some pictures of the glow plug wires in the engine bay to see how they are run stock/ colors of the wires or how you guys are running your manual setups, and yes I've seen the vids on using the 81 ford starter solenoid as new relays

What year? My '83 and '84 rigs have manually controlled relays, but all the original wiring is still present. It's just unplugged.

All I had to do to my '82 6.2 to manually over-ride the glow plugs was to hook up a push button to ground the blue wire on the original glow plug relay to activate it manually..

I also unplugged the glow plug controller so there's no chance of them ever coming on without the manual over-ride..

I have a wiring diagram showing the glow plug harness,etc--but its in a Haynes manual and my previous attempts to scan and upload wiring diagrams end up being too small to read or do anyone much good..

I can tell you this--my truck has thick red main power wires coming off the drivers side battery,to the glow plug relay--the wire connects to the large studs on the relay, then goes over to the firewall where 8 green wires going to all 8 glow plugs are spliced into the red wire, with a fusible link...
About all that can go wrong is the individual wires might get corroded or damaged, the fusible link might fry if the wires shorted to ground, and the thick red power wires could gangrene eventually...but mine are all original on both my '82 and '85 6.2's and still look ok...30+ years old..

If you wish to use a Ford starter relay, you'll need a switched 12V "hot" wire hooked to the "S" terminal to activate the relay, and hook the red wires to the large studs..

As you can see the hack job I'm dealing with, any pointers would be appreciated, there is a manual push back from switch wired into the cab for manual glows, but it's stopped working, I'm trying to figure out how the previous p.o hooked it up, the push button is connected to two black wires that I'm assuming run through the firewall, but it's also a mess down there

Well,I can understand your confusion...but what I explained above applies still..

I tried scanning my wiring diagram--came out "sideways"not sure if you can magnify it enough and tilt your head to make heads or tails out of it..glow plug wiring '83 6.2.jpg

GP relay should be in the driver side inner fender, right behind the battery. Check the last couple pages of my Suburban thread. I just shot a short video tour of this wiring for Greg. He was asking about my push button setup.

Either way, it should be simple, and hacked up wiring is infuriating.

It appears there is a Ford relay in one of the pictures, off to one side..
The main difference in the relays is the original one needs to be grounded to activate it,and a Ford one needs 12V applied to the "S" terminal to activate it...
You can ditch all the wires to the controller, just use the 8 individual glow plug wires ,where they splice to the red power wire and hook that red wire to one of the large stud terminals on the relay, and the red wire coming off the battery positive to the other large stud--and hook the push button to a 12V hot source and the other switch wire to the "S" terminal on the Ford relay...

Yes. Simple it should be. Keep it simple.
