Anybody know what this wire is? Comes out of the firewall right behind the transmission dipstick

That is a ground wire. It connects to the back of the engine block. It needs/should be hooked up.

Is there a specific place, or does it matter where it gets attached? Doesn't look big nough for a bolt, but rather a machine screw.

My 87 burb has the AIR going to the headers. It a pipe that goes around the back of the block. There are 2 studs comming out of the heads, on the back of the pass side head there should be a stud that that wire connects to. Going to be hard to see, so just feel around. Undo the nut and slide it in there. Hope this helps.

If that is unhooked you will have electrical gremlims! Check for one at the core support by the battery as well. Cab and core support is rubber mounted with no direct frame contact for grounding.

I tought this wire helped with the radio. Without it the signal gets static. I'm not sure however. I've been running the K5 with out it and have no electrical problems. I don't use a radio however.

Anyone have a spare I could use?

That is a ground strap as was already said and on your vintage truck usually goes under the rear valve cover bolt.

When you say "core support" are you saying the radiator?

sorta.. the radiator attaches at the core support.

Yeah..I got a nasty oxidized braid that runs from the battery negative terminal to that front piece of metal where the radiator is...is that the ground strap you are talking about or is there another?

You need to have the grounds hooked up, on my nova I left most of them off and somehow the shifter cable became the main ground between the engine and body and it burned up, almost burning up the car along with it.

While we are on the topic of grounds and ground straps.....I can't find a good diagram that shows where all the grounding points are.

You would think there would be a small number of them....

I have learned this:

1. Negative cable from battery to alternator bracket
2. Ground strap from negative terminal to "core"
3. Ground strap coming out of firewall goes to block or valve cover bolt.
4. Inside dash up above the emergency brake pedal
