I did the quick release hinge pin mod a few years ago and drove it once with no doors - "I" liked it... but felt a little self conscious about it...(just not sure about a burban... looks a little weird - not like a 2 door blazer or pick up....) what do you guys think about how it looks on a burb like that? And what fo you guys do about the mirrors? -- I saw a pic of one on the main page last month but I cant find it in the gallery now... input input plzzzzz

I think it may be illegal depending on where you are doing it. It's awesome for wheeling though. My buddy got pulled over in pa here in his 73 blazer and they told him only jeeps we're allowed to do it because of the 6 inch overhang at the bottom of the door openings so things can't fall out. He said it was bs but they let him off with a warning since he was close to home. I like the look of tube doors or half doors either way. It's slightly safer as well.

Regarding legality:

Once in a fit of boredom I read through the entirety of the California Vehicle Code regarding this very issue. (I have sleep issues!)

In short, nowhere does it say you must have doors. Also, nowhere does it say you can remove them.

As I recall, it states you must not modify the car's body and must keep all permanently attached body parts. I presume that's to keep people from cutting off the roof, etc. However, since we're talking about doors, and as you point out, other vehicles come from the factory thusly, you're in in a decidedly grey area.

In the end the cop can ticket you for having an unsafe vehicle, with the unsafe-ness determined by the cop, not you. My experience, including driving without doors, is that if you drive politely and don't attract the attention of the cops, they won't go to the hassle of ticketing you. Make a lot of noise, drive too fast, or otherwise make a point of being seen, and they'll find a way to bust ya.

That said, IMO Burbs do look a little funny without doors, but that's aesthetics which are purely personal. Lots of guys here have mounted mirrors to the door hinges, or to the upper bolt that holds the quarter panel in. Be sure not to lose the shims underneath it though.

If I were to do it, I think I'd be running some tube doors, maybe some with a small piece of metal at the bottom to catch anything rolling around on the floor from falling out, nothing too gaudy though, just something between be and the exterior for some sort of protection.

Do all four doors to match too. :D

I haven't seen any yet, but kind of like to *hint *hint....

some tube doors made for these trucks that somewhat follow the body lines or what have ya. All the ones I have seen, it seems the tubes are set back inside the door frame area. Imagine the tubes out further, like a standard door without skin.

After seeing this pic a few years ago, I decided never to wheel with no doors. Look closely under the rock slider on the driver's side. That's the driver's foot under there. A full/half/or tube door would help keep your legs inside the vehicle during an incident like this.

I would find it very difficult to wheel with full doors. I'm spoiled now. I think Kert's doors follow the lines really well. That upper bar is flush OR a tad out farther than the body.

@kgblazer5

that's the one I saw on the main page last month that started making me rethink doing or again! Yours looks good... the no windows and no rear cargo doors helps the look for sure though... Im working on it this week...ill post some pics this weekend hopefully... I dig it!

As far as I understand it, if doors were factory equipment then doors must be in place. CJ's apparently had doors as an OPTION, so they aren't legally required to have doors but a YJ or newer would. Kert's tube doors are a rigid tube preventing the unintentional exit of a passenger, with an approved latching system (I think.) So, factory doors? Doors required, of some sort. I may be corrected on my point, but it seems reasonable and a good way to deal with it if I were to be writing the law.

Fwiw my yj has a sticker on it that says:

The top and doors (if equipped) are only for protection against the elements. These parts will not contain occupants during an accident.

For legality it can vary by state by I doubt you will find anything that specifically states you must have doors. However as mentioned above it will be up to the cop's interpretation of some vehicle code. I don't drive mine a lot but regularly run into town and most trail rides require some pavement time and have never been hassled. There is one guy in our club that daily drives an XJ with no doors about 8 months out of the year and has never been pulled over, and several other guys who regularly drive various non-CJ/Wrangler style rigs with no doors. This spans over two different clubs of about 30-40 rigs each, but they are in the same state.

My K5 has the typical rockers replaced with square tube that also gives about an inch lip between the floor and top of the tube. The first ride without the doors I did not have the cage down bars that run down the side of the seat. Absolutely loved having no doors but did feel a little vulnerable. Before the next ride I had the door bars installed and feel much safer. When belted in it requires quite a bit of effort to get your leg outside the cage and basically impossible to get your foot past the edge of the rockers.
