and retained the electric fuel pump? im assuming that I just tap into the "feed" line and let the excess flow back into the return line...

You would need a fuel pressure regulator that has a return.

You will neeto get a pressure regulator that has a return outlet. Those electric pumps put out way to much pressure for a carb. Carbs only take about 5-9 psi on average and the tbi pumps put out upwards of 25-30psi.

thats the info Im looking for, thanks guys. I know carbs run on significantly less than tbi, didnt know they made a regulator with a return line.

thought there was more to it than just fuel. Something about Overdrive and torque lock up without computer from FI?

why not just get a mechanical fuel pump without a return? Cheaper and the cam already has the lobe on it to run the pump...

(Just a thought, I've never tried it)

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HLY-12-803BP/ thats the one I have on mine. I didnt go to a mechanical because I have dual tank and if one goes bad I have another to get me home vs a mechanical which if it goes bad it would fill the crankcase with gas.

Also with the bypass style it will help with vapor lock issues and fuel boiling in the lines/carb.

BTW the TBI pumps run at 12-15psi and a carb needs 4-7psi.

Also the '87 and later blocks are not machined for a mechanical fuel pump, so all you can do is electric in one form or another.

Interesting it must have been an engine swap then, because I'm pretty sure a friend put a mechanical pump on an 88 when he swapped it to a carburetor... He said he even left the electric pump in it, around $20 bucks for a pump... just what I'd do, because I'm always on a budget (married)

mine is an 88, not machined for a mech pump. I would rather run the electric anyway, its nice to have it fire right up.

The lockup etc isnt an issue on this, we did a 4 speed swap awhile ago.
