Help, i have to change the ignition lock switch, i have got the steering wheel off but now i cant get to the screws to get it out, there is a plate that is in the way, its a steel plate that the steering lock (the lock that doesnt let your steering wheel turn unless the key is turned to on, etc.) how can i get this plate off>

Go to the parts store and get a puller from them. I got mine from advance. It looks like a big "U" shaped thing with a screw that runs down the middle and has 2 round adapters that go with it. I'll take a pic of it tonight when I get home from work.

It's called a lock plate depresser. It depresses the lock plate so you can get the clip that holds it down off...

thats strange....... i've done this before and we never used one of those fango dango tools, we just used a hammer and some screw drivers and pressure. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

you want to use the tool so that you dont mess up the clip, do not bend it or twist it or it might not retain the plate, it is spring loaded by a spring around the column shaft just under the plate, get the tool they are inexpensive, i always use my stepdad's one from his garage all the time,

once you have plate remove it wil be easy to replace cylinder lock

Once you have the right tools, it's about a 15 minute job. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I made the tool out of a flat piece of plate with the two holes drilled in it at the right location and then used two sockets , 7/16 size worked well, between the plate I made and the lockplate,,,,
I had my steering wheel lock jam and I just had to take the column apart.... so Im right where you are

I paid $8 for my lock plate depresser...how much is your time worth? /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif

Some things just aren't worth building yourself. A lock plate depresser is one of those things.

You can always get it at AZ and return it as its part of the loan a tool program.

$15 takes it home, bring it back and return it.
