I recently purchased a 2000 Jetta TDI to give the truck a break from being my daily driver. Which has been awesome for three reasons... .its sooooo nice driving stick again, im getting 44.6mpg commuting, and im getting 61.8mpg on the highway. And as i do with all my new cars, i join a forum of experts that know the vehicles better than I do to find out everything i need to in regards to mods, and general maintaining of the vehicle.

Something that was suggested was a "diesel purge", that the TDI volks do, in which they fill a 20oz bottle with concentrated diesel fuel cleaner, and hook up to hoses to the lines that feed the fuel pump, and the return line to the tank. They then run the engine, with the pump pulling the fluid from the 20oz bottle instead of the fuel tank and the return line going back into the bottle. So youre running undiluted diesel treatment/cleaner/lubricant through the pump and injectors. Apparently this is a very common technique for german automobiles, as mercedies owners do it as well. Takes about 20-30min to burn the bottles worth of cleaner, in which you are supposed to vary the revs from idle up to redline.

The truck has been running a bit rough, starting great but with a billowing cloud at startup, and obviously a recent decrease in mileage. Ive used a few in tank fuel treatments, but Im thinking maybe the truck could benifit from this procedure. Im pretty sure its the same process, find the low pressure feed line ot the pump, and the return line, and hook up the 20oz bottle of cleaner the same way as on the Jetta. and yes, there is an inline fuel filter in the line that goes into the IP.

although it may just be coming up on time to have the IP and Injectors rebuilt. Its pretty much the only thing on the engine i didnt do when i bought it.
