anyone ever build their own hood for a full caged buggy/truggy ?

Not talking about taking a factory hood and cutting it down.....I'm talking from scratch ..... i need ideas......

I used a piece of 1/8 aluminum diamond plate with some T shaped aluminum stock rivited to the bottom of the diamond plate to stiffen it up....but it really hasn't what I wanted....it rattles like crazy...and began to crack from the stress of trail use...

I though of maybe making a template out of foamboard and covering it in fiberglass resin and cloth....and maybe use a low profile hood scoop to give it some rigidity....

just searching for ideas....:waytogo:

I haven't but I have studied what stock hoods have and designed a few that should be good.
What you need is ribs to stiffen it up, and they always make a slight curve in it, if it's flat it will rattle.
Ribs can also be incorporated in a design to make it look good while keeping it stiff.

Ive built a couple dozen buggy, Hot Rod, and Race truck hoods. Everything from fairly flat truggy hoods to swoopy sand car hoods to one that I am playing with now on a rock buggy I am building. Here are a few pic of some Ive had my hands on. Use alot of dzus tabs or bolt it down tight. I always use spray glue and attach nogahyde to the under side. That knocks alot of the noise down. We do use the foam to make and modify the fiberglass molds when we make changes. It works really well and with some patients you can make it look real professional.

If you use 3003 series aluminum and take the temper out it shapes very easy. If you want compound bends you will need to make it in several pieces and tig it together. Unless you have a English or other metal working tools.

this basically what I am looking to build...flat and simple ....

Is it hinged or how does it attach ?

It has about a dozen Dzus tabs holding it on. You can see the little dots in the picture thats them. No hindges. :waytogo: If its going to stay on you can even use nutserts with 1/4 20 bolts or button heads.
