OK I have has this thought running in my head for a year. It involves cutting up one of our toppers. Not sure what to use or if it could be done to work.

Here is the thought.

Cut the top out but leave enough at bulkhead to bolt it on and have area for snaps for canvas top. Now I haven't figured out how to keep water out at these points yet. The rear cut would be to leave enough for the back window to go up.

The window area would either be completely gone or the base (where bolts to bed would be left for snaps. On this thought might just use angle iron. The top of it would have metal tubing like all soft tops but going length wise they would go into holes in each end (fiberglass).

The thought would be you could roll up sides or just unbolt the rear window section. Pull the bars and canvas and go topless.

I am sure some one who works with glass could do a wonderful one but this is just a brain fart.

This might give you image of what I mean.

Comments? :doah:

That is a good idea, i haven't seen anyone else talk about doing something like that but i see it as very doable. :thumb:

Now get busy and lets see how it works out. :deal: :D

i cut up a top intending to do that once, and then decided it would be ugly because it would look like a big ass spoiler when the soft top were down, and i didn't want to engineer a way to remove the spoiler - how would i store it if i were away from home? then i'd have this big fiber glass spoiler in the bed of the truck... it just wasn't worth it for me.

i used my craftsman circular saw to cut it - it did a fine job. just don't forget that there's a metal frame in the back that you don't want to hit.

I was looking at how to convert a blazer into a cab and box and it got me thinking. It was done to M1009s by Roscommon Equipment Center in project 62 April 2000

Colby good to know like I said you would want to get the back as narrow as you could. In my thoughts it was more to the safari type to have sides up 90% of time. Like I said just been bouncing in my head and wanted to share before I forgot again.

Would like to try and do it just to see it.

This idea has come up a few times before and I thought somebody actually did it.

I think the way to do it is to cut away everything except what bolts to the bedsides and cab (you could save the front steel hoop, but not the rear). Then build hoops like any other softop. The only work it saves over buiding a softtop from scratch is the cab attachment problem. Sealing the canvas/vinyl behind the cab is still a challenge.

what the hell is that picture? :barf: :haha: you should try it - you could probably find a topper for free pretty easy.

Kinda but I would take out the fiberglass on the top too. The basic tarp would go over top and side only so it is wider than long. That should make cost lower and only need side window if you want.

So the overall idea is to basically make a soft top using a cut up (stock) fiberglass top as the framework, right?

Basically yea keep the bulk head to cab and rear tail gate window. Place two rods front to rear where the round/curve of the top to side would be.

So the supports could be removed and the back part removed also.

I did something similar to a half top, made it a 1/4 top but left the roof. Just sewed up some marine fabric for the rear and side windows-

DING DING DING yeap thats it! SO it can be done nice. On the one I was thinking you would be able to remove the rear hoop(where red line is). Now all I need is a place to work on my truck and do things.

BB06 I had that top I cut I left the center section and the front and rear took out the side glass and velcroed plexy glass to the top. In 07 I decided to cut out the Middle and leave it just long enough that it stopped just behind the back seat. With one window or sun roof instead of the two I had the year before. Hell that thing even worked in the rain. do you all remember. AHHHH that was cool. Anywho I never finished it due to some bad measureing now I need to figure out how to put it all back together.

Well git-r-done brother and post up the pics... If the trails weren't so tight here id do it to my blazer. I will be doing it to my 4runner though.

Blazekraze did one on his Blazer, basically just left the front bolt up part and the rear corners, it looked like a fiberglass canopy, was real nice.

haven't seen or heard from him in some time though.
