So i was messin around a little bit, and I found out that a hot runnin 350 can spin 35's on the pavement... at a cost. I snapped the U-joint, and rolled my rear axle a little bit. But has anyone else ever crushed their spring perches from doing this? mine are crushed in the front almost completely and apparently, thats not something normal . My dad used to run a 427 w/ NOS on his 76 blazer - along with 36's, and he said he snapped a ton of u-joints but never crushed his spring perches....
So, has this ever happened to anyone else?

Also, this is on a 71 Jimmy, with the stock 12 bolt in the rear and a 4 speed (i did maybe perhaps dump the clutch )

My old 12 bolt had a crushed perch and had a stock motor and 31s so I don't think it takes a big motor to do it. Maybe it just hit something too hard.

never seen perches break
P.S Bp you live really close to me. we should wheel sometime

the only thing i hit hard was the skinny pedal, and i can't take pic until tomorrow, but i can take pics of the u-joint...

I'm trying to plan a day in hollister sometime in may with a couple people. I need to practice on something other than a log next to a mud pit. I'll let you know if it gets out of the planning stage.

Rounded spring perches are caused by loose u-bolts. I have fixed lots of them. It requires new perches, center pins and u-bolts. After the loose u-bolts causes the perches to round off, the axle rotates up and breaks the u-joint.

they aren't quite rounded, as much as just plain flat out crushed in the front.

my 14 bolt had crushed perches when i got it.... corrosion usually has some play in it...

After the 1st test drive in my brothers truck, he was backing it behind the shop and heard a clunk when he shifted into reverse. We got out and saw one spring perch was cracked in half and the other one cracked the welds off. Somehow the u-joint didnt break and the axle stayed in the truck. I think the 650hp BBC and 46" Mickeys may have had something to do with it lol. And that wasn't even full throttle

pic time?

Yeah, clearly not a case of too much torque . . . that's a case of nowhere enough torque

on the u-bolts . . . :haha:

so the u-bolt weren't torqued right?
then again, i never checked them, and i bought the rig already lifted so...
also, does anyone think the spring perches are anyhow salvageable? or just get new ones or even make new ones? keep in mind i am on a budget
