Anyone familiar with exhaust laws?

I live in Texas and was wanting to redo my exhaust to true duals. With such a high lift going on it now, it needs to be rerouted to clear the front driveshaft, and rear exhaust exiting location changed due to the shackle flip going on.

In order to pass a state inspection, I was told at some point way back when i was young and didn't completely listen :doah: that here in Texas it has to run through a CAT, and it has to exit from underneath the vehicle. It cannot be dumped, because the entire truck(K5) is considered a cab. I asked, what if the camper was off? He said still has to exit. I went on about my way and had it done to the so called standard, but I've seen it done to K5's in the area before, and was wondering why can't I have that?!

Is anyone familiar with exhaust laws here or have something similar to that in your state???

Texas law says if it came with a cat, it has to have a cat. Tailpipes must exit behind the passenger compartment. Most inspection stations define that to mean behind the rear wheels.
My Blazer has the factory tailpipe and it exits right behind the drivers rear wheel. OH, exit means past the edge of the body.

Since yours is a 89 you still have to pass a emission test so you'll have to run it out through a cat. It needs to come out side the body somewhere, be it the rear or the side.

If you have to get it tested and a visual is required I'd make something close to stock.

If theres no testing, do what you want. Unless its incredibly loud there wont be a problem. However all the federal emissions laws require the cat and all smog equipement be there and in working order or some **** like that to be road legal.

What about putting a cat in on each tail pipe if you want true dual?

And I think it was CornfieldCreations that just did a two into one exhaust with a flowmaster Y pipe and it made a big difference in torque over true duals.

I am thinking of doing something like this to get around the driveshaft up front out back, is no real big deal just going straight out the back instead of coming out each side. Is there any rule of thumb on how far a CAT has to be from the exhaust manifold? I have heard that for it to operate correctly it needs to be.

Luckily the truck passes with flying colors. It would be cheap to come out the sides In front of the tires but not for sure on noise inside the cab and compatability when off the beaten path.
