Dangit,

As always, things get worse before getting better.

Was just outside cleaning up the threads for the diff cover bolts, and trying to extract one broken one, and noticed when I got the cover off that now the gear oil is away from the magnet at the bottom of the case. There is something long and thin stuck to it.

So I pull the piece out, clean it off with a paper towel, long thin sliver of shiny metal, obviously machined. Not good. Spin the carrier around, sure enough, part of the governor assembly for the gov-lock, the actual piece with the flyweights that runs off of the small gear in the carrier, stripped off. It's part of the teeth that get driven by that gear in the carrier. So I'm sure it doesn't work right.

Of all things it looks like a manufacturing defect, but the previous owner said he drove it on the street in his truck before going one ton, and his truck is on 39's or something, so I'm speculating it was probably *abused* on the street with big tires. :(

Everything else looks fine in there, and being the glutton for punishment I am, I wouldn'd mind replacing this piece. Of all places, the 1982 S10 service manual I have shows how to remove the piece, and it's fairly easy, although I don't have a tool to push the piece out, I'm sure it won't be hard to make something.

So anyways, after all that rambling, anyone with a 14SF carrier that doesn't mind parting with it or pieces, I'm in the market. GM sells it, but it comes as a kit, and I only need this piece.

If not, I'll start looking for an open carrier and a limited slip to drop in it. :(

Thanks for the offer, but with my use, that would be WAY overkill. :)

I just looked around though, cheapest of any sort of locker/posi for that thing is $350+ Heck, an E-locker is only about $600. Not that I'm going to get one, but it's not much more than the pricier locker setups. :(

My buddy has a 14SF he just pulled from his truck. It has a known good Gov-lock in it. He just replaced it with a 14FF...

You could try pm'ing him, his user name is BigDummy89K5 (Stan)

I just tried calling him and he wasn't home, but I'm pretty sure that diff is doing nothing more than collecting dust.

Thanks for the heads up, I just PM'd him, but if hes not a member, not sure he can see it.

Is that the same one I gave you a while back?

Well, as a matter of fact it is...:)

Gov-lock worked great, but we ended up with some gear howl. Then we ended up with a 14 bolt FF from the parts donor we bought for my 6.2 swap, so out came the SF and in went the FF.

Cool:D I'm glad someone got some good use out of it. Especially since the guy I got it from said it was on its way out.

James

Yeah, that Gov-lock looked like brand new and it did work well for Stan while it was under the truck. We sorta half assed the gears though, so it wasn't too much of a surprise they howled a little.

Rene

That was directed towards muddysub. :)

Besides, you think that 14SF will fit in my Kia? Kinda lost my parts hauler lol.

Oh hell, bring the Kia...we'll strip out anything useful and throw it in the trunk.

Carrier and gears
Axle shafts
Cover
Good drums
new wheel cylinders

etc etc. Then we'll just chuck the housing into the scrap bin.

Hey, girl and I were planning on heading up North in a couple of weeks, why not? She can see my dirty side lol.

Sounds good Dorian. Shoot me a pm when you know exactly when you're coming and I'll get things all arranged with Stan.
