Hi all, I am getting ready to start working on the jimmy. I am trying to build this on a super tight budget. I was wondering if you guys can post pics and descriptions of your cheap innovations, that might help me build this thing.
Stuff like spring swaps and all the well known stuff I can do a search for.
Thanks

Here's a good nearly free mod- move your front shackle hangers and build custom length shackles. By far one of the best modifications that i've done to my truck.

browse ebay, bargains can still be had on there if you take the time to search and look for things in odd places, such as listed in wrong area, and incorrect descriptions.

for example, i just got a 1410 yoke for my D60 for $25, and it is a brand new takeoff unit.

trim the fenders and ditch as much of the body as-is possible. low weight = high perf.

Flip the spacers on your trans cross member to drop the t-case down and get a better driveshaft angle.

If you ain't got money for a locker...click your parking brake in slowly when you get stuck. Brakes will slow the spinning wheel and send it to the one sitting still....that's gotten me out of a few situations....

move the battery to the rear? I'm planning on doing this too. My build is definitely a budget build.
thanks,
James

Buying stuff used will help alot. The spring swaps for the most part are not that cheap because they require you to run crossover steering.

Heres my biggest tip to keep the cost low: "If it aint broke, dont fix it"

couple things i can think of one maintain it so that you dont have to spend money fixin so much and 2 take the front sway bar out for better flex and 3 was for an earlier post about moving the battery to the rear well not such a great idea due to the gases that a charging battery can produce.

'Splain that?
Are you saying that putting in lift springs requires crossover?
Or something else?

Run all of you drivetrain vents into the engine compartment or high as possible to keep water out of your lubes. Use marine bearing grease on wheelbearings to prolong their lives in watery situations. Use the board classifieds, trust me it pays when your broke/badly bent.

Can marine greese handle the heat requirements for wheel bearings? Those little bastards take a beating...

IMO if you want to steer then yes. Its amazing how much more sucky the stock steering gets once you add lift springs. The other thing is if you move your axle forward or do a 52" spring swap you going to have to go to crossover due to the stock draglink being too long.
