Anyone have problems installing chromo d60 stubs? *found the problem*

Hey there guys. I tried installing my 4340 chromoly stub shafts into my dana 60 today and ran into some problems. First the yoke wouldnt fit through the knuckle opening. It was close but no cigar, so I took the grinder to it and ground some of the casting. I have heard of people doing this before. Couple trys and I got to to fit, no biggee.

But It appears for some reason that the shaft isnt sticking out of the spindle far enough? I put everything together and went to install the drive flange and it bottomed out against the spindle. But the shaft was flush with the edge of the drive flange. It still needs to go on another 1/8" or so, so that I can install the snapring.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I was getting frustrated and decided just to tear it back apart and I'm going to try and assemble the other side and see how that goes. :mad:

Had the same issue on mine with the knuckle flange but otherwise it worked out fine.

Be interesting to hear what ya find on the other side, good luck.
 
Are ford stubs shorter? I think they're are two different lenght stubs, Ford and chevy/dodge. Maybe you got the wrong ones?

I think that is the problem too.

S**t, you just reminded me about that, I forgot about the different lengths. Could someone get me a measurement? I'm gonna head to my brother's house now (thats where my trucks at) and take a look at the situation, if that's the case, then I'm gonna be pissed.

I got these stubs from the same guy I bought the d60 from. He told me originally that it had 35 spline stubs, well I got my drive flanges last week and go to install them, only to find out they're stockers. My bro called him and he said he had a pair of new 35 spline chromo stubs that he had laying around for ahwile and wasnt going to use them so I could have them for $50. If these are furds I am not gonna be happy with this guy :mad:
 
I am sure you tried this already, but did you reach in the knuckle and pull the shafts out toward the hub?

I have had the same problem before and didn't think to pull the shafts out of the carrier a bit to get the snap ring on.

Well you guys were right about the shaft being a ford stub and not a chevy stub. But here's the weird part, one of them was a chevy and the other was a ford. I put them next to each other so you can see the difference in length.

The ford stub shaft is on top. So I was able to assemble the passenger side today. Also the yoke fit through the knuckle with no problems. I did not need to grind the yoke to fit.

I have had problems getting my Yukon 10b axles in and out of the knuckles. They are cast with alot of extra material in the ears. Next time I pull them out I am going to take a flap wheel to the ears to clean the little extra off them to get them in and out easily. It isn't alot that needs to be taken off, but it is enough to make life a biatch if you don't.

Wow, can't believe I got that one right.:bow::D

FWIW, my 30spline outers seemed to be shorter than my 35 spline 4340s also, but they were original dodge, I think. I'm running a dodge D60 with external lockouts and I kept blowing those p.o.s superwinch hubs. We'll after a few in the scrap pile I started looking and I was only getting about 1/4" engagement. So I switched back to factory style, them exploded one of those. Finally realized that if my D60 was going to live on the rocks I needed 35 splines and external flanges. I love my flanges, well worth the money, but sucks turn on the payment with a welded front.:doah: I have to remove one side if I need to do much payment pounding. Not too bad, a few bolts and some duck tape to keep the dust out.:wink1:

Have you blown a 35 spline shaft yet?

If you had polyperformance flanges, you can remove the slug and reinstall the cap, no need for duct tape ;)
 
No the 35s are holding up. I don't think I can run those flanges. An external setup doesn't have splines in the hub.

Well my brother works right next door to this guy, but the guy wasnt there today, hopefully my brother will see him tomarrow. I hope this guy has another set lying around or something, it seems everytime you ask this guy about something, he says, "Yea I got one of those lying around my garage."
