Anyone here from Colorado that would lend a hand on my TBI swap?

Hey All,

I'm a teacher in the Denver area and have this week off for spring break. I'm in the process of pulling the wiring and motor out of a 1990 Burb to put in my 72 Blazer. I've found several good sites with diagrams, but, I'M FREAKING COLOR-BLIND!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the wiring and ECM pulled from the inside and is all now laying on the motor.

Jim

Feel free to email me at [email protected]

Also, does anybody know if a late model TBI Blazer fuel tank will fit in a first gen Blazer? I would like to swap mine out for the other for the in-tank pump and larger capacity!

Thanks Much!

I don't know crap about TBI or I'd see if could give you hand. :doah:

I'm nowhere local, being colorblind has got to make this a nightmare!

One thing I can suggest, is to use the pinout diagrams of the connectors, and a multimeter set to continuity to check your wiring, instead of using color.

I'm actually doing the exact same thing to the exact same year k5 in the next couple weeks.

The gas tank will not likely fit. I'm looking for an in-tank replacement pump that fits in the firstgen tank. I'll post up if and when I find one. Since TBI requires a realtively low pressure compared to MPFI, I've been told by a highly reliable source (4x4HIGH) external pumps mounted close to the tank will work fine too.

I have a little idea what you are up to...and I live in Arvada...

i just converted my 81 truck to TBI. I used an external fuel pump designed for TBI and have no problems. I fabricated a " T " on my fuel filler vent line and ran the return line to it. No problems. Since you have a factory harness just match up the ends to the sensors. I ran accross a web site a few months ago that showed the complete TBI wiring schematic. The wiring diagram was to small to read on a sheel of paper, so I downloaded it to a CD and brought it to Kinko's (?). They made a 36" x 36" copy. It was then very easy to read. Good luck, There will be wires already in the burb harness that you already have on your current vehicle. It's just a mater of removing the looms and sorting through the wires. luckily the wire looms protect the factory color code.

If you want to send me the injection harness I'll be happy to remove the unneeded wires and mark the connections for an easy install. The old style burbs have an almost stand alone harness for the TBI and are easy to retrofit into other cars. If you're careful you shouldn't need to cut any wires when removing the harness, the only wire that will need to be cut is the wire going to the fuel pump everything else plugs in.

I wouldn't mess with the newer tank it's a lot more work than it's worth. Just use an external pump like an Airtex E2000 they are cheap, easy to mount and work well.

The fuel lines are fairly easy as well, just cut the burb fuel lines at the frame 3-4 inches from the flex line, double flare and connect to the stock lines. I have done this on my own and can send pics if interested. The return line is a little bit tricky just because you'll have to eliminate all of the vapor lines at the tank, but once they are removed and the rubber lines replaced the original lines can be reused, again I can get pictures and help if interested.

Good luck,
Chad

I just kept my stock tank, like 17 gal or something. I used an external pump from Carquest, don't know # just matched PSI that it said I needed and my buddy ran the return line. He took care of most of the wiring other than what I am capable of which consisted of snap this part on that plug.:doah:

Also fuel mileage jumped to 14 to 15.

Hey Guys,

I appreciate all the feedback. I finally got all of the suburban harness off today in between helping a buddy install 4.88's in his '84 K5. It really does look pretty straight forward. Before completely removing it, I traced out the battery wire, ignition wire, and the start ignition wire. I hotwired them up, shot some juice to the starter, and boom.... fired right up. Tomorrow I'm going to sit down and competely trace every wire in the harness out and clean it up. Thanks again for all the help. This is a lot easier than I thought it would be.

I still think I'm going with a late model K5 tank for the extra capacity, internal baffles for off camber wheeling, and the in-tank pump arrangement.

It's only work, right?

Jim

How did your install go? I am doing mine starting this week. Mine is going on an 85 though

Doing pretty much the same swap here as well.Just bought an '89 K5 with a fresh crate 350 and a stock tbi.Runs very well.Gonna be putting it into my '70 trail rig and running it while I save and eventually inject my big block.I'm looking forward to being able to wheel steep in the rocks this season without everyone having to listen to me torture my starter:doah:
