1996 Blazer LT 4x4

Have a 3" body lift to go in it as soon as I get a minute. I'm assuming the body lift would make an sm465 install easier?? Anyone done that?? Any major out of the ordinary work that has to be done??

96 is an IFS right? if it doesn't already ride like a dump truck, no reason to make it shift like one?

go NV4500. better shifting, and wont give up your overdrive. use the internal slave variation and have fewer downstream complications with the exhaust and front suspension?

also- ive been told all kinds of things about how the tbi and vortec 5.7 were balanced at the factory- possible that removing a flexplate and bolting a flywheel on, without removing the crank and rebalancing... may cause it to be out of balance.

If the question was putting in a 465 to a 1st or 2nd gen K5 I’d say it’s been done a billion times but not to a 3rd gen ifs truck.

Though some early gmt400 trucks did have an option for the sm465 in them, I just don’t think it ever made it to the Blazer line when the 3rd gen came on in ‘92.

But I’d just go for a nv4500. The trans shifts better than a 465 does. You have overdrive and you know they fit. Though a 3” body lift might require some adjustment on the shifter and clutch hydraulic line to reach. But then again I’m not a fan of big body lifts due to amount of work required to deal with all the issues of the body going up.

I would think that the body would be similar to the trucks and a manual would fit fairly well. Probably wouldn't need much body lift. You should be able to use the clutch pedal from a gmt400 truck too.
I always liked the barn door IFS blazers, pretty good looking truck.

Not to get into the ditches over versions but I had (3) Gen 1, which were the 69-72 body style and full convertible, plus I've had (7) of the Gen 2 which were the 73-75 body style and full convertible, and (3) of the Gen 3, which was the 76-91 body style with the steel half cab.

The S-10 had its own versions not to be confused with the full sized K5

Yep 1996 Blazer LT is the smaller Blazer alot of people refer to as an S-10. I have a 2002 Blazer LS which is the smaller Blazer but nowhere on the vehicle does it say S-10.

  • The full-size Blazer was discontinued for 1995, replaced by the Chevrolet Tahoe , which featured two-door and four-door body styles. Fourth Generation (1995-1999) 1997 Chevrolet Blazer - carsforsale.com By this point, Chevrolet had confused consumers and dealers alike with naming both the full-size and mid-size versions of its SUV Blazer.

My '93 S10 Blazer only says S10 on the glove box, but it also is a Tahoe trim level. Thanks GM!!

Wait, do you mean a 96 S10 Blazer?

That is technically a 2nd gen S10.
This IS the "S-series models" sub-forum.

lol -not going to get upset- isnt my thread and apparently im dazed and confused - s10 sub-forum?? i didnt even know we had one here. Im wondering how i even stumbled upon your origional Post!

Ive never known anyone in my 46 years to call the suv an "s10". Maybe "s10-blazer" and "blazer". There were no full size blazers made after 95. They became Tahoe.

Don't get upset, but I asked specifically about sm465 for a reason. They are about 1/10 the price of a 4500, and I happen to have 2 of them that are currently doing absolutely nothing. Also, this................................................ S10 ......................... blazer (as the sub forum title notes) is primarily for offroading and camping. I don't a ton of top end, which if you are familiar enough with 4.3's they are aren't going to win and races anyway, and with oversize tires you really don't need OD running 60 or so.

if it is an s10- my vote just changed to nv3500- go raid the parts out of an s10 pickup that was equipped with manual trans.
I've considered it, but I have 2, 465's not doing anything right now..... Is the 3500 what would have come in a 4x4 s10 truck???
