I looked on YouTube but it’s all electric choke stuff. Like having a carburetor wasn’t antiquated technology enough.

Sucker is way too aggressive. It completely closes the throat and that isn’t needed here. Also, I can walk into a burger joint and walk out, try to start the car and I’ll find the choke closed.

The little vacuum jobie doesn’t do nothin. It moves but doesn’t help. I tried clocking the shaft and linkage but it’s not splined. So that leaves maybe the stuff on the exhaust? Dunno. Still working this new carburetor out but overall it’s better than the old one.

I believe there's a spring in the manifold that connects to that rod.
Have you checked it?
It may have corroded away or have an adjustment.

What year & size engine?

I found this. Hard to find exact info

Choke works great. Closed when cold and opens when hot. It just needs adjusting. It’s my 64 Nova. Not sure if 192 or 230 engine. I have not pulled the cover off the exhaust/heat spring yet. Was hopeful the adjustment would be at the carb. Removing the cover could be a can of worms but I guess that needs to come off. :dunno:

It is. what is it you want to adjust ? The rpm speed or the butterfly, two different adjustments. Then the pull off is a third.

Huh?
Hahahahaha

I don’t know. I thought the choke was just the butterfly on top. If I play with it some, it starts and runs. If I leave it closed, she won’t start. Sometimes if I hold it WOT from inside the car, it will “run” but coughing with lots of black smoke. Mind you, the choke blade is closed when I do that. It’s the only way to start it and run, given time it will warm and idle fine but she’s richer than Oprah until then.

I'll have to look it up. I haven't messed with one of these since the 80's. If I could lean on the fender a see what it is not doing right it would be easy. Hard to do over internet.
need specific answers.
1 with engine cold and off, is choke butterfly closed? If so how closed? is blade set hard against air horn ?
2 after engine is started, how fast is it running ? should be 1700-1900 rpm range. Choke idle speed screw near throttle bell crank.
3 after engine is started the white vacuum pot should retract and pull the choke blade open a small amount, does it ?
Adjustments will made by bending the long rod to choke stove coil. Making this rod shorter will set the blade softer. Longer will set blade harder. There is a specific gap the blade should be set normally a drill bit diameter. IDK this spec atm. You could try @1/4". The drill bit will be used on lower side of blade against air horn, while either holding the white vacuum pot stem in, or using a vacuum pump, the drill bit should just drag on the blade as you draw the bit out of air horn. Adjustment for this are to bend the link rod from vacuum pot to choke bell crank. All 3 off these adjustments work together, if one is off you get cold start and driveablity issues

Highly technical info. Makes tuning efi look easy!

I tried clocking the shaft and linkage but it’s not splined.
If the slotted choke lever doesn't stay aligned to the choke shaft then it will never hold whatever adjustment you give it.

If you pull the long rod off from the choke, it should be obvious if the hidden bimetallic spring is still attached. As long as it's still springy there should be a way to make it work. The correct length is the real question. (although come to think about it, if the spring has relaxed too much, it could pretty much do the opposite of what you want)

How many times so far have you considered installing a manual choke cable?
