I have a 14FF with disc brake conversion. Thinking about going D70 and want to know if the disc kit I have on my 14FF will bolt up. Thanks

*edit* Except for the rotors of coarse

Which D70 are you considering? They are not all the same, so there are different kits.

my question is why go to weaker gear setup with smaller ring gear and 1 less pinion bearing for a older axle and harder to setup gears combo ?

whats wrong with the 14ff you got now ?

See above post. Unless yours is broke. You're better off with the 14ff. Looks like its got a pinion or seal issue or both. I'd say the axle you have is stronger and more versatile than that 70.

While they are virtually the same, the D70 does not have a smaller ring gear - D70 @ 10.54" vs 14 bolt @ 10.5".

I'm no engineer but after looking at both axles I would imagine that some of the reason the 14 bolt has a 3rd pinion bearing is because of how close the 2 big bearings are when compared to 2 bearing axles.

Your post makes it sound like a D70 is a weak axle and that's not the case. In fact, depending on which version of D70 is being used, the pinion and/or carrier bearings can be half again (or more) bigger than 14 bolt bearings and it can have bigger axle tubes.

While I readily admit the 14 bolt is a great axle and cheaper to build, some of us prefer the option to use deeper gears. :flipoff7:

So you're saying its about the same axle. Not much use in changing it unless you want extremely deep gearing. With the extra pinion bearing it more than makes up for the other bearings issue. Are the axle shafts any thicker on the 70. Otherwise not much point in changing it to me from the 14. It's pretty much bulletproof.

On the axle shafts, the nod probably goes to the 14 bolt; 14 bolt @ 1 9/16" 30 spline vs D70 @ 1.5" 35 spline.

I was considering going to 5.33 gears and thought 70 was stronger hands down. However since most agree, not much to be gained in strength I'll build the 14ff. I have atlas II so I think I'll be fine with my 4.88 gears.

you can do 5.38 in 14ff

as for my post before i wasnt slamming the dana 70 but i have seen less gear problems with 14ff or others with 3rd pinion support bearing over a 2 bearing style. and lots of guys say and have showed the snapped off pinion were the yoke splines stop and the front bearing starts on dana axles.

and yes a 70 is strong . also like said there is a LOT of versions of the 70 so make sure you know what your getting.
