Anyone know of a good top engine cleaner?.. here\'s my problem...

My 89 K5 sat for 13 months before putting it back on the road. Now.. I have valvetrain noise.. valves are sticking and the problem comes and goes..
Once... I went out, started the truck cold, no valvetrain noise... until driving it for awhile and the engine was nice and warmed up.. the valves started sticking again.
I've heard of good cleaners on the market... who's used them and had sucessful results? Which product have you all used?
Any help is greatly appreciated....
And I want to give everyone an update on Batmanjr... Aka Bruce... he's in Iraq, he's doing well.. and he can't wait to get back working on his K5... Miss ya Bruce... /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/usaflag.gif

I've heard of using auto-tranny fluid for this, poured (slowly) into the carb while slightly revving the engine. Saw a guy do it years ago, can't remember if it worked or not......just that if fogged out the exhaust BAD!

Maybe someone else has tried this /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Other than that, I'd say something off the shelf designed for that purpose.

Try some 'Top End Cleaner' available only at your local Chevy parts dealership. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I've taken some ATF in a cup and put a carb vacuum line in there to suck it down into the combustion chambers. Acts like a detergant, cleaning up the carbon and what not.

Also heard of adding some aft to the oil and running it for 5 minutes or so before an oil change. Does the same thing as those motor flush products.

I work with an ex-GM certified mechanic who recommends the GM top end cleaner. He bought an late-80's Ford F-150 with the injected 300 straight engine from work really cheap because they couldn't get it to run right (missing, stalling, low power, etc....). Running the cleaner through it solved all of the problems.

You are talking about top engine cleaner, yet you are having valve train problems?

My understanding of top engine cleaner is that it goes through the induction system, cleaning out deposits in those areas. (intake, combustion chambers) Am I wrong here? Everyone else is talking about the same idea.

So top engine cleaner won't help lifters at all.

I've done a quart of ATF in an engine before, didn't seem to hurt anything, but I wasn't having any problems at the time either, just a junkyard engine I figured I'd try to clean out a bit.

I have a feeling the only problems you have are lifter ones...unless something is physically broken, I don't see valves sticking open. Theres a lot of pressure on the valvetrain as long as that spring is working correctly.
