yup, that's why the xj shaft doesn't fit the older boxes.You absolutely certain about that?

Not 100% but I actually think the cutoff for the 7/8" is '78.
Agreed, but hard to tell, my 77 has 5/8, but GM did vary their applications.
Just look at what years had d44s. I know for sure 74 and older are 7/8, anf somewhere 77-79 they go 5/8".

And don't forget that your "74" truck is 33 years old and someone along the line could have easily swapped in a different year steering box that was different from original.

how about the 205 transfercase is that worth while. i would like to do a doubler with a 203. the tranny i have now is a 400
If you currently have a 400/205 then you only need the hard to find 32 spline 203 range box and adapter.
