Thinking about picking up a berrin 4 seater buggy for 2500, It has everything, but the engine has a knock. Does anyone know of a good place to get parts and stuff for these things. The guy doesn't know what year the motor is either. Its the 1600 CC with dual webber carbs.

Those motors never last more than 100k so it's not likely to have the original motor, but if it's a stock 1600, it'll be the newer version (69+).

If it really has a true knock, it won't last much longer so you'll need to rebuild it. It's actually not that difficult. I used to be able to do it over the weekend back in highschool.

Pick up a copy of Hot VW's, there's tons of sources for parts.

not a hard motor to re-build. lots of sources for parts. buy a hot vw or
a vw trends, magazine. dual carbs must also be syncrinized, motors will last like forever, watch the movie "sleeper". :D

I helped a guy rebuild one a few years back. We dropped it out the bottom of a bug, picked the car up off of it and rebuilt it right there, new jugs and all, that afternoon.

EASY!!!

Figure out where the knock is coming from. The bearings don't wear out that easily and the rods and crank are nearly unbreakable so you don't have to split the case very often. I used to streetrace one on nitrous and I would have to replace the pistone and cylinders every month or so but only split the case maybe once a year. Since it's in a buggy, you can change the pistons and cylinders with motor in the car pretty easily. I would say one hour to dissasemble and two to three to put it back together.

If you plan on hopping it up with more stroke or larger bore; split the case and have it line bored, deep studded, and have the rear main webbing area welded as the blocks crack there pretty easy. Consider 8 doweling the crank and flywheel and get it lightened.

10 years ago you could have all the machine work done for less than $200 and pick up the kits complete with crank and jugs for around $450.

The best book is the "Idiot's Guide"

Thanks for the replies everyone. I found a place called MOFOCO, and they have a long block for 1k. It would be easier just to do that, and I step up in performance. Hell the chasis is worth 2500 alone, not to mention the paddle tires, the mud tires and all the chrome on the thing. :) I'll post pictures when I get back, I think I'm going to go in 50/50 with my dad on it.
