Anyone rebuilt a 700 themselves?

#732 front oil pump with a 7 vane rotor - a mystery unsolved

The tranny which I originally swapped in back in 2001 was a 1990 production core with KCM stamped on the case. During the teardown (with the tools in my possession, including the snap ring tool and piston compressor), the pump bolts (which connect both pump halves) were never serviced since I noticed no toolmarks.

There was no evidence to which my tranny core was ever serviced.
 
that is wierd, ive never heard of a 7 vane rotor ever put in a 732 pump. i have 3 732 pumps here that all have a 10 vane rotor, an 87, 91 and 92, i may have a 94, but im not sure its a 732 pump.

I rebuilt my 700 a while back. Was sliping and would loose reverse when cold. It took me a few weeks working on and off until I finished. I found out the hard way that above 91, the 700s used a thicker 3-4 steel shims in the clutch pack. I bought a Haynes GM Auto Transmission Overhul book and a clutch spring compressor. After buying new shims, rebuilding the whole thing, and reinstalling it, it worked flawlessly... for about 400 miles. Something must have given up internally, cause it was pressurizing the fluid in front of the pump. It would blow out the front pump seal faster than I could add it (to get it home). Ened up getting it towed. Never found out the problem...

Anyway, I can give you the demensions of the spring compressor so you can make one. Or you can borrow mine, i wount be using it anytime soon. Shipping might be a tad high though :eek1:.

The only tools I would recommend other than normal tools are the spring compressor, a good pair of snap ring pliers, petroleum jelly, and a lot of patience. As stated above, I used the split ring seals (cause they came with the kit), so I didnt need the installation tool. If your using the 1 piece seals, then I think the installer set would be needed.
