Anyone running 35\'s and 3.73 gears?

I am finishing my axel rebuild and well, my cash is gone. So I am stuck with 3.73 gears. I want to run 35's or 36's and have decent performance. I dont plan on any mud races or off road challenges but I would like to travel around and do some serious off roading. I have a Detroit locker in the rear and plan on getting a lock right in the front so I feel I will have adequate traction but if the power is not there I will have to wait for a little while before I can complete my project and I cant wait!! So if anyone can give me their opinions on my situation or any experiances you have had please let me know!
Thx
Brent

What trans/transfer case combo are you running???

I have a sm465 4 sp and a np208 they both have good low gears. I run 35's and i have 3.42's in the diffs.

My wifes Sub runs 3.73s with a 350trans.With 33" tires it has plenty of power to move that thing pretty good.It has a 406 smallblock so it has the power. With the overdrive trans you have you may want a little lower gearing other wise your engine may run below its power range on the highway.Brady

Re: Anyone running 35\'s and 3.73 gears?

I've got 35" BFG's with 4.11's and think that my RPM's are a bit high at freeway speeds, and I used to have a Blazer with 35's and 3.08's which seemed only slightly higher geared than I would have liked. So I don't see that you'd have any problems with 3.73's and 35 or 36's.

Re: Anyone running 35\'s and 3.73 gears?

I run 35's and 3.73's with an OD tranny and love it. I'm realistic; 98% of my driving is on road and this combo suits me. If I did alot of towing or hardcore offroading (not gonna happen as long as it's my daily driver) I would probably step up to 4.11's...

my 74 has 373s and i have 35s. i dont like it. top freeway speed is 60 and i still get 10 mpg at best. so why not have the fun of lower gears? btw 350/350/203

Re: Anyone running 35\'s and 3.73 gears?

Hey Misfit, 60 MPH top speed? I have 35's with 3.73's and the SM 465 4 speed and my truck will pull 90 MPH easily, tops out at about 100. I pull a 5200 lb trailer every summer. My cruising RPM is about 2400 RPM on the freeway, and my mileage isn't bad at all. Overall I like the 3.73's and 35's, it works well for me.

Re: Anyone running 35\'s and 3.73 gears?

I used to run 3:73 with 35" tires (700R4/NP241), it wasn't to bad around town but really sucked in the mountains, then I went to 4:56 with the 35's and it was about right, now I have 4:10's with 36" tires and it sucks big time, after the 60 swap I'm going to 5:13 for some major scoot up the mountains. Go to www.ring-pinion.com and they have a calculator that you can get your ideal RPM range from.

Re: Anyone running 35\'s and 3.73 gears?

So there is no power for climbing steep inclines...I do alot of off roading in the snow, and trail riding..maby an occasional mud bog (nothing like the pic of Y2K5) maby 2-3 feet deep. I certainly do not want to get stuck and I would like to make it out to the next get together in Colorado and perform well... I may go with 4.10's, I found a front set I may get cheap and I if I do I will look around here for some one with a 14FF set.

Re: Anyone running 35\'s and 3.73 gears?

I used to be able to get close to 100 with 3.08's and 35's and have no problems doing 85+ with my 4.11's. It sounds like you might have engine problems. You should be able to get a bit better mileage than that too.

Re: Anyone running 35\'s and 3.73 gears?

Remember, power for inclines depends greatly on how your engine and transmission are built too. I've never had any major power problems with mostly stock 350's.

Re: Anyone running 35\'s and 3.73 gears?

I have 33s with 3.42s and its OK. I still have some power down low, but I can't peel out or anything. It has a lot more power higher up, so I get good acceleration in "D" around 50-75. I have a 700R4 and NP241. Its really good for passing on the highways

Re: Anyone running 35\'s and 3.73 gears?

I have 35s w/3.42. Most of my driving is on the highway, so its not bad. When I do get a chance to go 4wheelin, it sucks. When its my 3rd vehicle I'm changing to 4.56. But the odd thing is I only get 12 mpg on 35s w/3.42. I thought it would have been better than that. Maybe because I have to mash the pedal to the floor to get going!
