Anyone running a 2WD->4WD converted 700r4 ?

I don't know if those parts are interchangeable..I doubt they are..

You should PM Greg Ducato ,a member here on CK5,he rebuilds transmissions for a living and knows his stuff,he could give you the answers you need...

I only "know" what I've read about 700R4's on the web and in books..personally I dislike them a lot,but its a lot easier to put back in what you removed from a truck , than go adapting a different transmission in it..

So would you then recommend swapping all the original 1990 tranny parts into the ‘84 case assuming they are still good? That was an option too. My aim is to not spend any more money on the truck if need be. I’m on the edge to sell it as is. Hoping to just get a new torque converter and rebuild kit.

You can't, at least completely. Maybe some of the parts, but the case casting changed, and with that some of the internals, so not everything is going to swap. Better option I would think, would be to find a core later trans and swap parts into that.

The later (better) trans have a large "half round" casting part line on the passenger side that passes through the cooling line ports.

The 84 transmission aligns fine because me not knowing it had a different input shaft put it in the truck hooked up to the old torque converter. Enough to say it didn’t work. So I think the case has the same dimensions as the later model 700r4s. I just need to know for sure. I’ll see if I can find that guy on here. Thanks for your help

Well shoot. Ok I’ll keep my eyes open for another case. I see a bunch for 100$. Not sure what your talking about though about the coolant lines. I was able to hook up the coolant lines to the older case. Unless your referring a something else

I've always been told that the casting line (half circle) shown above, going "through" the upper cooling line fitting, easily and quickly indicates the later, better castings and in general the more desirable 700/4L60's. I want to say they changed in '87, but it's been a decade+ since I've messed with a 700. Greg will know.

The early 700's were fairly problematic. At least compared to what came before, and what came after.

FWIW, and to poke a stick in every auto trans owners eye, my buddies 1990 Suburban, with factory original 700, added trans cooler, worked excellent for the last ~5 years, since he purchased it. Moving halfway across the country, on a short timeline, Saturday night, that 700 lost it on the first mountain pass he came to (after having tested the truck with load before hand). Didn't even get two hours from home. Thats why I drive a manual. lol

Short answer: Throw the early trans away, build your late model trans, there are so many improvements to the later trans we could start an entire thread.

Copy that. Thanks for your feedback. I’ll see if I can find another later model case.

Just as long as it is a gas truck 5.7 TBI from that era it is a full interchange.

The K cases are obvious but are the V cases obvious or do we just assume if they don’t say K on the bell housing they are V? I found one that is an ‘88 but no K stamped on it

The case will be stamped nothing or they will be stamped K...there isnt a V case.

The V refers to the model of the vehicle, I don't think I have seen a 4x4 case of this era without the K. Curiously, the Corvette specific case has a large V cast into the bell to identfy it.

Found a K case and a rebuilt transfer case for 50$. Nice. Stripped it down and found only a few minor things. A large spring broken and a few seals needing replaced. Clutches look ok actually. But I’ll replace those.

Any recommendations on a rebuild kit? What I should be looking for? Cheap-good- best options if you have time. Or point me to the right thread. Appreciate all your help thus far.
