Anyone running a comp cam extreme energy roller?

Just wondering what you think of there cams before I go spending 300.00 on a shaft. Installing it in a 1996 vortec 350 with the stock lifters. engine has 80,000 miles on it and I am also going to install the correct valve springs to match. Im going carb set up and putting this in my 1986 k5 cucv 1009 blazer;)

Seems the local motor guy here -- 4X4HIGH -- says when you do new cam you gotta do new lifters or you'll kill the cam.

I take it -- not knowing anything about newer motors -- that the Vortec has a roller set up already? I mean, you'd need roller lifters for the radical cam profile, I know that much. Regular lifters would get thrashed quickly.

Comp cams makes a very good product. I'm building two BBC's for Greg72 and a SBC for myself right now which all have Comp cams in them. One of the BBC's is a 502 and has an Xtreme energy (01-410-8) hydraulic roller cam and the other is a 496 stroker with a retro-fit Xtreme energy hydraulic roller (11-408-8) and my 355 SBC has an Xtreme fuel injection hydraulic roller (08-464-8) in it.

You can reuse hydraulic roller lifters on a new cam without any problems. It's when you have either a hydraulic flat tappet or a mechanical cam that you cannot reuse lifters when installing a new cam. You are more than likely going to need to machine the heads for the correct valve to retainer clearance if you go with anything more than about .475" lift on the cam. I don't care what anyone else tells you or you read anywhere either. I've worked on enough of those heads to know they cannot accept more than about .475" lift before the retainers smash your valve seals and tops of the guides.
 
Klink- you may also want to look into the GMPP "hot" cam- it is pretty reasonably priced too, and offered in a kit with springs, retainers, and 1.6 RR's for about $500. It is also available separate.
