Brethren,

I need to find a hard top for my 73. I almost had one a few weeks ago, but it would have cost a fortune to ship it and I just didn't have the money at the time... it was perfect too:(. If you know where I can find one, let me know, thanks. -LB

I have one off a '74 to sell.

No windows and no cracks. Needs paint. $100 and you come pick it up.

thanks for responding... two things: could you post a pic and the dreaded question... are you motivated to ship it?

I could post pics but why waste my time since I will never attempt to ship something like this. :doah:

I will tell you this: if you happen to be on a road trip or know of anyone passing thru my way, then I would be more than happy to help load it onto whatever is there to haul it back to your place.

cool, no hard feelings. I appriciate your offer; wish the circumstances were better!

Let me ask, if you know, how does one go about shipping something like this? I've never heard nor tried it, so, maybe if its possible you can find a shipper, they can just swing by my place and I help them load it. Is that how it goes?

Ya, that's about right. First I would have to contact a shipper in your area that would be able to do it, and for the right price. On your end, it's a little bit of a project, and would take a day if you had the supplies and tools. Usually if you want to ship bulk freight like that which has unusual demensions, you have to build a simple exetenal frame out of wood for it, and nail supports inside to secure it in place. Meanwhile I would create a contract with the shipping company to arrange to pick it up and they would either ship it directly from your house or take it to a freight company to contract it out. They would arrive at your house, they would inspect it, you would sign a release on the freight, and they would haul it away. I'm estimating that it would probably weigh about 300 lbs and the shipping company would let me know if they would need help at the pick up site or if they they would bring a couple of guys to lift it. Overall, it would probably cost you about $50 bucks in 2x4's and nails, some time that you would have to set aside to build the frame, and then the company would contact you to coordinate a pick up date. Anyway, other than the cost of the top and reimbursing you for the material, it would cost me a few hundred bucks to ship it (which I would have to keep secret from my wife!!). In a nutshell, it's a lot to ask from someone who just wants to get rid of some junk-Hahaa!

Ok, I understand now. I remember my buddy crating up a rear clip off some car to ship to someone out of state not long ago. He used pallets underneath with 2x4's screwed to each to make a larger pallet. I could do the same thing. But does the top need to be covered, or framed, around it? And left open, too? Basically a stick frame covering the top sitting on pallets.

If this is the case, I could do this. I'm pretty handy at carpentry and have plenty of access to pallets. I even have use of a skid loader at work, too.

Right on, that's good news- and I appreciate your help! Well, let's do this before either one of us commits: I would need to see it first, if possible, so if you could post a few pics I would appreciate it. I understand that it's old and from what you have described, I know what to expect. Also, I will need to contact a shipping co. that would be able to do the job for a reasonable price. PM me for your city info so that I can give the shippers a location, and I guess we'll take it from there and see what happens... sound good?

I will get pics tomorrow. And I'm in Ellsworth, Kansas 67439 zip. Your best bet would be to find a shipper in Salina, Kansas as my town is too small with a 3K population. Salina has several shipping businesses.

Well, things are not looking to well.. the least expensive line haul is out of Salina, but even that is around 500 bucks... before fuel costs!

Right on man, checked out the site, but didn't see anyone coming and going in either of our directions. If you are trucker savvy and know about this kind of thing, let me know- than's a whole different world to me! Thanks again!
