I had said a couple months ago I was strongly going with a GMT400 platform. I was just sitting on the computer looking at trucks and remembered something I had always liked and wanted to do.

http://www.trail-gear.com/videos , Video number one has a few good shots of the truck Im talking about. Its a 4runner with a flatbed. I was thinking about hacking open the back of the cab, and building a flatbed around the opening.

Im really dicey on where Im going with the truck but this thought this second was that $100 in metal and I could totally change the shape of the truck.

I think Chalet 2506 just put up some pics of his crashed truck, cut open recently.

More like so. Red would be a definite remove, taking out all the back glass (yellow) would be a possibility.

Id then design the flatbed around that area being open so you could pass through. Possibly like the allpro toyota flatbead.

I would frame the cut opening out with some 3/4in box tube so its not just floppy sheet metal. Id make some sort of frame and it would wear a bikini top off the back of the cab. Id also make some sort of twist locked snap on cover for the inside to seal the cab back off.

That second pic is totally what was done with the CUCV M1010 ambulances. Their cab opens into the box on the back.

At this point I have to ask, why not just build a K5? Open cab to the cargo area, no fabbing need apply.

Last I checked you wanted to run a smaller bodied rig and set it up for more of a x-country type wheeling. Did this change?

If I switched over to a GMT400 this would be the goal. If I kept the 87 I would just be building a day wheeler trail rig.

I really dont see the point to switching everything into a k5. If I went to a k5 I would want to ditch the bed and tube it out so opening up my pickup cab to a flatbed is pretty much the same thing.
