Has anyone done this using all the factory stuff, just change the bulbs? And what bulbs to use? And would it make the dash brighter, easier to see?

They make replacements for most bulbs now. Some are better than others, and some are brighter than original.
There are tons of them on the web.

i just did the chrome paint trick and all new 168 bulbs.
168 is 1 watt brighter than 194 bulbs.
also on the chrome paint . paint the back side of the gauge overlay.
then i used ultra flat black to redo the front. then full reassemble and wow .
did this for my 92 caprice also worked on that one.
and i did one for my buddys truck he loved it also.

How many bulbs are in the dash of the 168's? I think only one bulb is working in mine and will pick them and some paint up on my way home this weekend to do this.
thay are cheep just get a pack of 10 bulbs and get 3 194 for the turn and high beam thay dont need 168.
