I was cruising ebay to see if there was anything good and came across these hood hinges. Way too expensive IMO, but has anyone seen/used this kind before? Looks like it uses a small hydraulic tube instead of a spring, would this help prevent hood bending?

I've found lots of threads saying if you keep your stock hinges lubed you'll have no problems. I know this may sound like a dumb question, but what is the best way to lube the hinges? In all the threads I found none really explained how to do it the right way, maybe I missed it? My hinges are terrible and I really have to yank on the hood to close it and I'd rather not bend it more than it is (its not bad, but I can tell it is starting to bend.)
 
I've got a set, I got them specifically because they are supposed to take the stress off of the hood and prevent the wrinkling that is so common.

As far as lube.. I'd get a can of white lithium grease and spray it on all the moving parts.. nothing too complicated. Eventually though, that spring is going to bend your hood... they also make hood reinforcement brackets you can use. LMC has em.
 
I litteraly pour drain oil on my hood hinges often--its worked to keep the hoods from kinking on my pickup and Burb..

On other trucks I've owned that already had the kinked hood syndrome I "fixed" the hoods by bending them back,then oiling the crap out of the hinges and adding a length of some galvanized slotted metal "U" channel about 1/2" x 1/2" on each side where the kinks were--(the stuff used to hold some shelves up I had lying around,it fit perfect and was stiff enough to prevent further damage,yet still fold up if you got in a head on crash and keep the hood from poking through the windshield..).

I dont like white grease or lithium lube,it fails to penetrate into rusted things like hings pins,and dries up to a gummy film rapidly..its better for corrosion prevention...I prefer oil,and it needs to be applied often..if you use some gear oil,Lucas or STP type stuff it'll stay put longer and reduce friction even better..
 
You definitely need some oil that penetrates into the pivots. My Dad always used his oil can. It's kinda messy, but it works..
It helps to push towards the cab while pulling down on the hood when you close it too.
 
I always pull down on the side of the hood till it's almost closed, easier to reach and less stress on the hood. Lot less likely to bend.
 
I have to do the same thing, but one side at a time. If hood is all the way open i have to get something to stand on! I am only 5' 6"
 
Just the opposite for me--I'm 6'5" tall,and get the "Chevy hood penis" latch thing puncturing the back of my skull nearly every time I have to look under the hood of a square body..:doah:..reaching the hood to close it is no problem--..
 
I'm short, theres a reason my bumper sticks out. Makes a handy step when I'm working in the engine bay.
