It heats a larger shop than mine currently. I think it's 80,000 btu

all i know is the older "pan fired" style suck donkey testes...

we have a newer lanair at work and the quality is hit or miss . and service SUCKS .

the boss ordered a new gun unit to swap out the old one and it was defective out of the box . the guy was not willing to admit this was a bad unit and wanted us to test 100 things first . my boss said send another unit or my c.c. company will be talking to you . got the new and it worked better than the orignal when it was new .

i have been around a few over the years and if i need one its a clean burn 100% .

also there not a set it and forget it unit . the oil thickness/temp all play a roll in the way it burns . so there will be tweeking at times needed . unlike a house fuel oil fired heater thats basicly set it and forget it .

and i cant say this to much . . . . . GOOD CLEAN USED OIL IS A MUST . if water / anti-freeze or other crap it will run like crap . let the oil settle a bit and dont dump direct in to the tank the heater uses . have a setteling tank or 55gal drum and dont pump off the direct bottom .

Yah I plan on some sort of separating tank and filter. I'm gonna put the main tank outside. Kind of. I will pour a small pad build an enclosure for it and make sure it is heated.

I also have as of right now 2 sources of clean oil. Usually 20 gallons minimum every month. All engine oil.

I'm getting the whole setup for 400 bucks. And honestly it might end up being cheaper. Depends on how much help my buddy needs. Originally it was 500 but after the last couple weeks I've helped him on paying jobs. Told him to just put that money towards my heater.

Btw propane was gonna cost 1000 bucks to get a tank dig the line and plumb it to my heater. The heater I got for free.

So I'm dollars ahead right now.

From looking around the smallest one in that line is a 100,000 BTU.

Considering that every BTU calculator puts me at around 65,000 BTU. It should be plenty.

And dang these things are spendy brand new.

Only used ones I can find are in the 2500 dollar range!

With those type of used oil burners I agree with keeping your oil very, very clean. Even then they can have issues. There are better designs for burning used oil, but those are something you would have to build.

A few guys I know who had them liked the "free heat" but had some issues with them and as noted above, once you bought one, your pretty much on your own if it doesn't work well or has issues..parts were hard to get and expensive..and just a little coolant, water,or other non-oil stuff in any free oil they burned would cause problems even after filtering it good..

I saw these about 10-15 years ago, most likely they have been improved some by now ..

The "best" one I saw looked like one of those old fashioned globe gas pumps,it had a mesh screen about 2 feet in diameter and it glowed orange once you got it going...
I think it was gravity feed and needed a little compressed air to work...guy used ATF in it from fluid changes mostly, had few problems with it..

The main turn off they disliked was the fact they would end up with some contaminated oil that was settled on the bottom of drums or the filter setup, that had to be "properly disposed of"--it didn't take long before they had a 55 gallon drum or more to dispose of...its considered hazardous waste, and they had to keep a log showing how much was disposed of,and by what company, being in a repair shop business ..
They even do that here with used fryolator oil!..

W.W. Grainger used to sell a Beckett oil burner for waste oil,I haven't seen one in their catalog in years though..looked just like a typical burner for home heating oil..
I bet some people decided to install one in their house furnace and burn waste oil, cant have people keeping warm for free, right ?..
EPA most likely put an end to those burners in anything but an industrial application..
