I was at the junkyard today and saw an old chevy van, '72 I think. Anyway it was a 1-ton and I saw that it had the Eaton rearend. Are these things any good? What would one be worth? The yard wants $89 for it.

They're probably worth the same as a 14 bolt.

They have coarse spline (16?) axle shafts, most had low gears (4.56) and many had factory detroits.

The 14 bolt detroit and shafts are a direct swap, clearance might be a little better on the Eaton. Replacement bearings/parts are fairly expensive.

The housing is steel and hence you can weld to it (great it you plan on linking it) and it has a drop out third member.

19 spline.

If the axle is in good serviceable shape it's generally considered a sound piece. As he said though replacement parts are hard to find and generally not cheap.

Trying to remember who but there was a guy on here and Pirate who had one of the tricked out Eatons with the 14FF parts in it.

I run them, and think they are the best diff out there for light duty stuff,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,anything under three ton. They were used from 3/4 to 3 ton trucks. For gear ratio's 4.10 , 4.56 , and 5.13 are about your only choices. I shaved the bottom of one of mine and now have more ground clearance than with a 12 bolt.

Has anybody disc'd one?

I am assuming the strength is comparable to a 14BFF...???

The drop-out 3rd member intrigues me...

I *think* I saw that the disc brake brackets for a FF14 bolt also work on an Eaton.

Strength is probably comparable but IMO the 30 spline shaft and locker upgrade is worth it unless the Eaton already had a Detroit.

Yup, put rear discs on it, and machined the hubs and redrilled for 6 bolt. The 14 bolt was the replacement for the eaton, as they felt they didn't need a diff that strong. I'ld post pics,,,,,,,,,but I don't have access to post pics.

Ive been running an Eaton in my truck for 16 years and agree its the best light duty (under 3 ton) rear out there.
Its brutally strong and has better ground clearance than a 14 bolt.
The drop out center section is a nice bonus. I have a 4.10 4.57 and a 5.13 centers. Just in case I want to go bigger.
Standard 14 bolt ff disc brackets work.

Ok i gotta stop reading this thread. The more I read, the more I want to go back to the junkyard and buy another axle I don't need :o

wait now 6 bolt hubs!?!?!?!? I must know how that was done!

Cornfed runs one

He's been in TTC, he has 47's now

You have to machine the hubs down (making them thinner, questionably safe IMO depending on how much needs to be removed) to allow 6 lug wheels to fit over the hub, weld up the 8 holes for the wheel studs and redrill the hub for the 8 bolt pattern.

Yup I did machine it down. The only questionable area is where the snap ring goes. Then I just redrilled for 6 bolt. No need to weld up the 8 holes. I made three of them when I did it, just in case I broke on the trail. I've beat on it pretty good, pulled a 12000lb trailer, and so far,,,,,,,,touch wood,,,,,,, its worked well. I did it cause I had a locker for an eaton, and my mags are six bolt. I also kinda like the sleeper look. Six bolt wheels, its gota be a 10 or 12 bolt;)

I have at least two sitting around.

God axles.

My money says they're lighter than a 14. Dropout third AND a removable cover in the back.

I have an eaton half ton and 1ton FF...

I am now considering taking them apart and seeing whats going on inside them...haha
