if you wheel w/ 16.5" rims, I want to know how bad is it? do you pop your bead a lot? I don't air down to extreme pressures, I usually stay around 12-15 and I mainly do trails, very little mud, but some rocks. I found a great deal on some 37's, but they are on 16.5's. I like the inner airlocks, but they would not be affordable for me at the same time as the tires, but a possibility down the road. I just want to know if I'll be kickin myself everytime I go out until I get the inner locks. I've never lost a bead on my 15's but I've burped them a couple times. I read that some guys have welded their own safety bead to the inside of the rim, but I'm not a good welder so I wouldn't want to mess that up. you guys think I'll be ok? I have a co2 tank, so I could re-seat on the trail.........

16.5 are fine hard to get rubber for at least around here but they work fine. Maybe not hard to find as hard to find variaty. I've had two sets they were fine. I stick with 15" because I like the LOOK. An lil cheeper on the rubber stuff

I have wheeled a ton with 16.5 rims and tire and as long as you dont go too low you will be fine. It also depends a little on the width of the rim, a 12'' wide rim will be more likely to debead than say a 10" or a 8" because it doesnt hold the tire on as tight. Offroading in really rocky terrian can cause it to debead easier but aslong as you have CO2 I wouldnt worry too much plus carrying a a good ratchet strap to put around the tire when trying to refill it will help a bunch.

+1. I run 33x12.5R16.5 and will step up to 35's later this year or early next. I tend not to air down largely due to the BBC weight up front. So far no bead issues. If you do run into issues, H1's are a viable solution in addition to other commercially available locks on the market.

Lots of wheeling with 16.5 here too, no serious rock crawling though. On my 9.75 wide alcoa rims 10psi never caused problems. Actually with more than 12psi my 37 H1 tires won't bulge out at all, front or rear. This is on a K30 with 6.2 Diesel and a 15000 Ramsay winch at front.

Here's a pic of my rim:

And here with about 5 psi:

Vee, I just jumped in this boat a while back. My plan is to get a set of cheapie steelies and do a weld on beadlock setup. That way I am still only into the wheels for about $100 a pop and they are fully functional. When I bought my 16.5 tires I thought the same thing about the safety bead until I found this link.

So needless to say, I am looking for these to do a weld on beadlock and then have around $75 into each wheel. The only thing that I am not sure about is the 4 - 4.5" of backspacing.

Anyone have input about that backspacing and 39.5s?? Rubbing issues and such?

I have wheeled with a 16.5 for about a year now. Lots of rocks snow mud, I air down to around 10 never had a problem. tires are 42x 15 on a 10" rim

What backspacing are you running? Any clearence issues?

Never really measured them they are just a normal chrome steelie so I would imagine about 3.5 to 4 or so no clearance issues I am running high steer too stock brakes on a Dana 60

Due to the lack of the safety bead on 16.5's, they're not ideal for wheeling situations where you run low pressure.

I'm running 16.5 H1 wheels and love them, but wouldn't run any other 16.5 because of the low pressure (and by low pressure, I mean 2 or 3PSI) situation.

Check out H1s! Ive had two sets and for the price, nothing Ive seen compares due to DOT laws.
Oh and an inpirational pic too lol:D

nice :waytogo:
I almost bought some H1's off of pirate, but they are too heavy for my 10 bolt front axle. if I ever go to a d60, then I'll probably get some H1's w/ runflats, but for now I want to keep the rotational mass below 100lbs ;)
