To do the shock mod like the uAV has, is there an optimum angle that they need to be angled in to? I will be doing it this week, and wondered if theres any math I need to do!
Thanks

Mike

From what I have heard the angle is 22.5 degrees. My friend mounted the ones on his Sammy that way and thats what I figured mine for.

22.5 eh? Wow, thats pretty exact.

Thanks

I still have the RS5000 shocks for a 4" lift on the rear, 12" apart up top and right next to the spring perches on the axle end. My mount bar is tight up against the underside of the frame and the shocks lean towards the front of the truck a few degrees. At max flex with one tire in the air my shocks are not maxed out and I gained quite a bit of travel. A side benefit is that it actually rides nice in the rear now. Before it was almost as harsh as the front.

I could run longer shocks, but then they'd have to be mounted closer to each other at the top so they didn't botom out under compression.

Do it the easy way. Check out this mount.

Very nice setup. I wish I could, but by the time it got to me here in Canada, Id be lookin at nearly $250.00 without shocks. Us northerners just have to try and fab as best we can the same type stuff. Mine wont be as beefy as your setup is, but should do the trick. I am using 3" angle x 1/4" steel cut and welded to kinda the same shape and idea only upside down. I am going to mount it to the top of the frame, and it will basically let the top shock mount be about 1.5" above the top of my frame. (I have a 3" body lift). I will get some pics of the process, and the finished product to post.

Thanks for the input.

I didnt do any math on mine.Iv got 5012s in back.On the axle both shocks are on the front of the axle on the factory mounts,up top I built a new crossmember for an upper mount. At the top there 5" apart.Dont know what angle there at though.

I have a question about this...When the axle moves back/foward as it articulates, how do the shocks move foward and back since they are no longer paralell(sp?) to the spring? Do the bushings give enouogh to keep something from breaking or what? Am I making any sense?

Brian

I dont think it moves enough to worry about... anyone?

At full droop my axle only comes foreward a couple of inches but that doesnt change the angle of the shocks much. The bushings give enough .Full stuff to full droop in the back is about 28" and I dont have any problems with the shocks binding.I found an ok pic .Its from before I did the Springer shackle flip but the shock set up is still the same.community.webshots.com/user/beaterwhang

I ran this idea passed a desert racer. Reply back was this way of mounting is good for low speed stuff, for running the dez, the mounting points need to be perpendicular to the frame. That's my plan.

plus the piston rotates inside the shock body, I dont see why they'd ever bind unless you get a lot of air time...

Air time, good. The major problem I have with it, which also includes the stock mounts, there is only one side of the mount bolt supported. Yeah, probably okay for slow speed stuff and the occassionaly high speed oops; but I wouldn't trust it to hold up constantly getting pounded.

I am planning on getting the set up from 85. It loos like a good set up and can be adjusted.

Where did you get your weld on mounts from?

Frizzlefry,
How do you get 28" of travel? Is that measured at the wheel? Or the axle? The RS5012s that I put on the front only extended from 19" out to 33". Thats only 14". You must have used even longer shocks.
Also, was that before or after the springer shackle?

Thanks for the info.

Frizzlefry's measurement of wheel travel is at the tire - from full stuff to full droop, probably using the edge of the fenderwell as a reference.

This amount of travel is made possible by my "Springer" dropping shackle system and the flexible springs that I use - although I must admit that Frizz's truck does exceptionally well because of his "shock mounting" arrangement. By comparison, my truck (the first experimental "Springer" guinea pig) travels about 24" in the rear - and so far every truck that has installed my suspension travels at least this much. One customer has reported 30" of tire movement! - but I'm not sure if he had shocks on it at the time. My rear shocks are 9012's but due to the way they are mounted - they tend to limit the droop a little more than Frizz's.
