so I finally picked up our new 91 suburban 1500 4x4. I noticed right off the bat it as stock dual shocks. I have searched and thats why it became more confusing as to which is which. I have always had single shock rigs so this a new one on me.

I have heard dual shocks make ride worse make ride better

I have heard it was duel because of the old shock technology back then wasn't the best.

If going to one shock I have heard the front is the stock one and the rear on is the auxiliary. AND I have heard that exact opposite.

If I order a shock for a 4" lift front end which spot doe that new shock go into?

Ride quality is a priority for me. MAXIMUM flex is not even on my list.

I was looking at getting the Bilsteins 5100s or 5125 in a heavier valving

Help:dunno:

Ditch em. I cant remember which one is the better to replace with a single though. Look into the 7100s if you REALLY want ride quality.

I was told that the factory dual shocks were basically half valved, or half the damper effect as a single shock, equaling one shock, but the duals were there for shock fade control from heat during heavy use.

I did touch my duals once after a serious washboard type dirt road, they were VERY warm, almost hot.

I still run the duals, gas charged, yeah they may be a bit stiffer, I removed one leaf from the spring pack and it didn't ride too bad really after that.

That makes me think the old shock technology theory may have some truth behind. There are a lot of fullsizes out there today that run single shocks.

4xcrazy, what shocks are you using?

Got them from Rough Country when I bought the lift kit, the originals were some hydro type shocks, I was having bad body roll issues, I called them back and they sent me these 4 nitro gas charged ones. Helped, but didn't eliminate it.

It did ride rougher, especially over speed bumps, but eventually I removed one leaf spring from the pack, second one from the bottom and it smoothed out the ride considerably. Still rides like a lifted truck, but he harshness on bumps isn't there anymore.

I had two trucks with stiff 4" springs and one with quad and the other with single front shocks and I never noticed a different between them

I run the dual system on the 87 Burb just cuz there was 2 holders. I put the rancho 9000 and adjusted them to the softest setting for road use and bump them up when wheeling.

Ok your new here, but I'm requesting you start a build thread for your sub in the suburban section! I liked your light upgrade writeup and I wanna see more pics of your sub

Ok, I will get all the info together and pics in the morning. Would that be the 36 to present suburban section?
