i tried searching fir it but cant seem to find anything, a few years ago there was a write up on welding the spider gears in your axle it was really good had pictures and all... if anyone remembers this or has a link it would help me alot. just got a free beater 77 dodge full time 4x4 looking to make it a field rig...thanks

The old article you are looking for was written by kidjethro I believe. The one where you weld in between the teeth right? It has been hashed out many times on the board, and has pretty much been decided that way is hard on the spiders. You should fill the area everywhere they touch, or you can use filler material and make a ball out of it like this post has pics of.
