ill be putting a 5.3 lm7 a 1992 nv4500 a magnum under drive and a 205, and 40's, There is 4.11 installed, can i drive it like that? what would be the best for dd and trails?

Get the gearhead app. You can calculate all sorts of ratios. And play around what you want to run. RPM at 55/65 mph etc.

The magnum and 205 along with granny gear will make up for the 4.1 ring and pinion on the trails.
Dd you would probably never use the over drive.

65 mph in of would be @ 1550 rpm

I'd run that combo all day long. The 4.11's will help with the 2-3 gear split. Or maybe it's the 3-4. Can't remember on the nv4500 but one of the splits is a big jump so the extra gear will help.

EDIT
Just read on 40's. For driving around you'll want a lot more gear but as said earlier, the magnum and 205 will help on the trails.

40's and 4.10 gear going to be a bit on the slugish side . If you street drive and have a lot of hills even worse.

I did 38's on 4.10 with sm465 4 speed it worked but could of been better . Bonus tho was i got to use 1st gear a lot more .

They say if overdrive trans and more than 35in tires go DEEP in the gears . Few members here do overdrive and 35in tires and deep gears after non deep gears and love it .

I built a blazer for a guy and did nv4500 and 4.56 gears on 37inch tires and that was a real good mix of both street friendly and trail fun .

I used the Spicer calculator and estimated the 40's to measure around 39" tall mounted. It said 2475 RPM at 70 MPH in 5th gear with 5.13's. and 2354 at 70MPH with 4.88's.

I'm assuming D60/14BFF. I would go with the 5.13. Or even 5.38's.

I say that because you never know if you will step up top 42's later or
larger.

I’m running 40’s on 4.56 but that’s because I don’t have overdrive. If I had o.d. I’d do 4.88
But with that 5.3 you got maybe 5.13

So if I go deeper i need a new carrier right? And from what I've read here I can drive it, it will just lag because I'm in the mountains and all the hills. So 4.56 - 5.38 would be best over all? 5.38 if I want to go to 42's. I'll run it like this, and save for arb's and deeper gears.

There are thick cut gears that will fit your 4.10 carriers also. But yes, different carriers. i am running thick gears in 5.13.

Definitely drive able, will just be a little slower and long winded.

The 4.11 will be painful if you are using 40” tires. I’m running 4.56 on 37” tires and the nv4500 is barely ok. I wish I’d have gone with 5.13 instead. I may even go down to 36” tires at some point.

40" tire @ 70mph in 5th
4.10 = 1800 rpm
4.56 = 2010 rpm
4.88 = 2150 rpm
5.13 = 2260 rpm
5.38 = 2370 rpm

42" tire @ 70mph in 5th
4.10 = 1720 rpm
4.56 = 1915 rpm
4.88 = 2050 rpm
5.13 = 2150 rpm
5.38 = 2260 rpm

you want to know the power band rpm range and try and keep the cruse speed in the middle or just under the middle of that window . otherwise you will be rowing gears all the time to find the power .

i drove a long bed truck on 46" tires and built 400 hp 355 sbc with a 4 speed and 4.10 gears . it was o.k. but a dog down the road unless it was flat land . told him if he was to have kept the truck gear swap for the win .

Also remember an auto trans has a bit of gear reduction in the torque converter. That helps a bit with taller gears that a manual trans doesn’t have the ability to do.
