Are D44 rear brakes, the same as 10 bolts?

I have a rear D44 with new brakes, and drums etc and was wondering if they fit a 10 bolt?

Your post title makes this a little confusing since you said your D44 has new brake calipers (which would mean FRONT axle not rear). If it is a front axle you're talking about then yes the D44 and 10 bolt calipers will interchange BUT the D44 uses a 7/16" banjo bolt and the 10 bolt uses a 10mm banjo bolt so brake lines will need to be changed as well if you're swapping calipers.

So D44s are front axles not rear axles:doah:. Ok then I have two trucks both with rear 10 bolts but the pumpkins are different on each one. Whats going on here thanks a lot keep the info coming.

Chevy did use a D44 for the rear in the 1st gen trucks (not sure about blazers but don't think so). When you said caliper that would lead me to believe you were talking about a front axle since there are no rear D44's factory with disc brakes.

Snap a pic for us and we can tell you what you've got.

Yeah sorry there drums not disc I will take pics later thanks.

The rear brakes between a D44 and a 10 bolt are different. The drums for a rear D44 are getting pretty hard to come by these days.

And he could be talking about a 12 bolt rear too

Not if he counted the bolts as it appears he did. A D44, D60, and 10 bolt all have 10 cover bolts and we all know that a 12 bolt has 12 cover bolts. Since he said the pumpkins are different that would lead him to believe either a D44, D60 or 10 bolt and the D60 was never mentioned.

Here are the years and axles used on the small K trucks

Dana 44 - Front axle (1973-1977/78)
GM Corporate 10 Bolt - Front axle (1977/78-1991)
GM Corporate 12 Bolt - Rear axle (1973–1981)
GM Corporate 10 Bolt - Rear axle (1982–1991)

I have never tried to swap brakes across the different axles but, a little measuring and possibly some drilling and such can make them work.

Big issue is whether the register fit where the backing plate sits on is the same.

Brake drum diameter and width is certainly important.

The other issue is the size (Bore diameter) on the wheel cylinder.

One must keep the ratio between the master cylinder bore and the wheel cylinder the same as the factory had it.

If one strays too far off, the brakes can get real hinky.

Hope this helps some.

The master cylinder bore size as compared to the wheel cylinder size are all engineered for each brake setup.

If you get the cylinder size wrong, the brakes can either work toooooooooooooooo Good as in LOCK UP :eek1: or work Poorly as in not enough brakes.

The proportioning valve also plays a part in the equation too.

You could go slightly wider on the shoe/drum combo as long as the cylinder remains the same.

If you had a buddy that works at the parts house, you can check to see what parts went together.

Hinky __ as in NOT correct or with undesired results.

OK I fell like a total jack ass sorry, the one I thought was a D44 is a 12 bolt :doah:. So I guess I should ask will 12 bolt brakes fit a 10 bolt sorry for all the confusion.

Ok, as far as the flange for the back plate it concerned those are the same between 10 and 12 bolt. There were 2 different sized brakes (width of the drums) that were used on a 10 bolt and IIRC also on the 12 bolt. What you need to do is measure the distance from the backing plate flange to the wheel side of the axle flange, if these measurements are the same between both axles then you can swap the brakes between the axles.
