I noticed a lot of cars, trucks and parts, etc., on Craigs and a local trader site here in my county have some asking prices that are a bit higher than what I'm used to seeing and knowing that they'll actually sell for.

Wondered if anyone else sees this. I'm finding old trucks like ours as bone stock, rusty, running or not, with asking prices around $2500 or more. And in reality they're nothing but $500 beaters at the most.

If this is the case of rising prices, then I think I'll list my two K30's on the sites and eVilbay with a buy-it-now price of $25K. Just because I can. And because others do, too. :doah:

yup noticing rust is going for a tons of money, and nice stuff is hard to come by. Unless your in portland, oregon it seems.

Don't know about else where but in Seattle there are plenty of 73-78 that are going under 2K. Junk yards are full of nice trucks that are rust free. Some parts are cheaper on CL then the yards. Right now are the golden years. I'm not sure how much longer it will last. K30s go for big bucks but cucv can be had for 2-3K. If I had more space I would pick up some parts rigs on the cheap to store. Seams like the 1987 silverado and later crew cabs get the most cash.

I've got an '85 K30 and an '87 V30, both are literally rust free. Like I said above, maybe I should list both of them as one auction and the BIN price of $25K.

I'd be happy to take that money and run. Even though the '85 I've had since '96 is my baby, money talks.

Id just like to find a nice lower mileage k5 so my dad can buy it for my mom, but cant find one anywhere. She has a nice 84 monte to drive it 4x4 is always nice in the snow. Everything is either extensively modified or cobbled together or is halfway returned back to the ground or just plain pricy lol.

SEEMS like the scrap boom over the past 5-6 years, cash for clunker B/S program, and Craigslist and eBay being user friendly along with computers everywhere have all contributed

There are still deals out there, just have to look harder.

Pretty tough finding anything "cheap" here any more--junkyards squashed everything the past 3 years since scrap went up to 260 a ton, mostly trucks older than 10 years old, that have a limited resale market unfortunately, that weigh the most...

Parts like trannies, engines and body parts are advertised for outlandish prices on CL and at junkyards when they do get anything worth saving---they know they got you by the gonads because you'll be hard pressed to find anything similar for less money..you just dont stumble across many deals, only places you still can sometimes are at swap meets,or when someone is forced to abandon a "project " due to financial woes...other that that you have to pay top dollar, and pray what your buying dont turn out to be junk, especially with automatic trannys...

its been going up around here the last few months ive seenrust is a big issue and still rusted trucks are gettin a good amount.the deals are there, but it took me almost 6 months to find my new blazer for a good price.needed some tlc but thats what got the seller to drop it a 1000 bucks from what he wanted.

I laugh when I see this junk on CL

I learned in this business a long time ago.

We may not always agree with the price of the part but value is different to everybody.
We may know someone who has a engine for $100, the yard sells it for $300 but it could be fixed for $200.

What's best for the person paying for it will always change, and that leads to the value part.

The yards seem to be the only option for people and people.usually don't have the time to wait around for the best deal.

doesnt look that great for 3500 dollars.maybe 1500 in the condition its in.he said he doesnt need it gone right away and will sit on it.so he will have it a while if he keeps that price firm.with good paint and all yeah id pay 3gs for it if it was mechanically sound.everything has a price and its worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.im a cheap mofo and know what stuff is worth.so to see things like that its kinda funny

Yeah, I agree here in the rust belt maybe $1500, but I love that he wants to trade for a chevelle or older nova :haha:

I've seen some pretty nice 68-72 chevys going for a hella lot less, he can keep it

For me, I just refuse to pay high prices. After 30+ years of building projects, I find there is always another part or vehicle for sale sooner or later, so if one is too high in price, and they don't accept my offer, then another item will come available soon enough.

I was looking for a decent shape K5 for my daughter. Some nice ones came up in the $2,500 price range which I think is too high. I offered $1,600 for one, the owner didn't accept, and a few weeks later I found one that needs a tiny bit of work for $800, and it already has a lift and 3/4 ton axles.

So I'm not telling others what to do, but my opinion is just don't pay the high prices.

Note- during my search I also found some K5's in the $3- $7,000 range as well, which is strictly dreamland, but it does make others think their junk is worth 4 times more than it is.

I will put in my 2 cents here.
The prices you see out there are asking peices, and those have always been around.
Things are still going for much less, actually much less than it should and hopefully soon, things will get nack to where they should.
Not just with cars but homes or anything else as a whole these days you can buy them much cheaper than their individual parts which is making it impossible to build homes, fix cars or try to put anything together for profit.
Now is the time to hoard all this stuff because soon, things will have to level off and then you would regret missing out on the deals.
Unfortunately these days I don't have enough to buy houses so I do the next best thing, buy trucks.
I finally found a buddy that has property and is willing to use it for a joint venture if we can both make money off of it.
After I am back from my vacation in february, I will start aquiring more, some for parting and some for holding on to resell at a future date.
That unfortunately is what happens when you inflate things beyond their potential, the buble bursts and you end up with nothing, or in this case below the real value, and it will take some time for the real value to get back.
:eek1:
These days I don't bother fixing any of my cars anymore, I just put them aside and use another, parts to fix them unless I get from my inventory, are too expensive.
I even bought another Suburban because mine wouldn't run.:dunno:

Someone said it earlier, with the internet in general and all the different shows on tv make alot of people who have something old think they have a gold mine. Here on the right coast, I go to the Carisle spring and fall swap meets. It the past few years it has become somewhat of a joke, some of the vendor looks like they went to the scrap yard and brought to the meet. Then you have Barrett Jackson, American Pickers and several others, which I thinks has done harm to anyone looking for a good deal.

I was just having a coversation with one of the guys at Autozone here last night about this. It's the same thing around here with car and truck prices. $500 beaters for sale for $2000.

They are asking $2000, not that they will get it.
I see them all the time here $2500 or $3000 for rusty beat up mid 80's 2wd trucks.
I can get a CA no rust truck for under $1000 and it's 4wd.:dunno:
At the same time, sometimes I will ask a lot fro my stuff, if I get it fine, if not either I lower my price if I want to sell, or I just keep it.
SOmetimes I am surprised, I get my asking price, should I complain?
Nope.

I agree with Ice,

Yeah, the market is different in all areas. And times of year, times of month.

I've sold things for less just to move I and not deal with all the tire kickers, but if its something with more value ill wait.

Bottom line, we ALL have to be knowledgeable bout what we buy and sell.

I always sell.things for what I would buy them for. I believe that also sets a market price in a certain area. If you do enough business in a local area you don't want a bad rep.

I actually have found most people do t stay current with what values are and they seem to think they have gold.

Prices have gone up here with the iron price. I paid $400 for a junk '88 K5 the other day with a spun rod. Not too many years ago I would have paid $100 for it.
