a guy down the street from me has a 1968 1 1/4 ton kaiser / jeep M-715 military truck. here is the specs

Transmission: Warner, T-98 four-speed, synchronized
Transfer case: 2 speed, NP200, 1.91:1 low range
Axles:
front: Dana 60
rear: Dana 70 full-floater
ratio: 5.87:1
Brakes: Hydraulic, 4-wheeled drum
Fuel type: gas
Fuel capacity: 28 US gal
has a GM 6 cyl.
what do you guys think? anyone have one? how much would you pay for it? anyone know if the axles are locked?
 
The axles in that truck aren't really that similar to the D60's and D70's that many people swap into trucks, really the only similarity is the ring and pinion.

The old D60 will be closed knuckle and have small shafts (1.3", same size as 30 spline 10 bolt or D44 stuff). The D70 will have coarse spline shafts too, stronger than the front though.


If you want a cool old military truck then go for it.

None of the parts in it are super stout (other than the NP200), so if that's what you're interested in I would pass.
 
Axles are stout, but no aftermarket anything. Drum brakes. Expensive disc conversion was available in the past. Engine is a boat anchor at best. I owned one for several years--actually restored it to like new. Check out the M715zone. It's a forum devoted to these beasts. Only built from 67-69. I'd build something more modern. Heavy sucker too.
 
Pass on everything.

Don't waste time or coin unless you're into military resto jobs.

Otherwise stick with the tried and true GM stuff.
 
You tell me:D. All though they are probaly more work than you want. But it's on my lottery list.

1st pic is 2.5 ton duece axles in it.

2nd is newer axles swaped in as thay didnt come 8 lug. thay had a big 6 pattern or big 5 i cant recall 100%

3rd looks like stockers with spring over flip.

stock i have read 38-39" rubber fits. then flip the springs over and go 44" rubber no problems. and i think its 5.** gears in the axles. i think 5.86 ratios. but stock 60 is closed knucles and less beefy than newer stuff.

thay have divorced tcases and lots of people swap in gm drivelines. and thay are super cool looking in my book.
 
Do what my buddy does. Buys a old Jeep Chief Cherrikee or however you spell it. Takes out the 360 and all the Dodge/Jeep and puts in Chevy axles,motor, tranny, transfer case. They are cool looking rigs.
 
I think they look awesome, but I'm pretty sure your limited to like 45 mph in one. That being said, I would like to own one at some point in my life, but maybe swap in a cummins or a 6.2.

They are really cool trucks, at least looks wise. Guy I work with has owned one for years and is pretty involved with www.M715zone.com. They really aren't that great any practical use in stock form though, unless you want a military resto. Manual steering, super stiff suspension, drum brakes, can't handle highway speeds (it will run 60 mph, but better have ear plugs and stop to let the non-direct drive NP200 cool off periodically). You can put on skinny 38's (his has 13/38-16's on the stock wheels) with no clearance issues, but then again it has almost zero flex.

He took his on a few trailrides and with open diffs it sucked pretty bad even with the 38" Swampers because the suspension, plus was pretty tiring because of the steering and brakes. The rear D70 is a split-case version so a Detroit drops in just like a 14FF...he installed one and it helps capability a lot, but again he stopped taking it on the trail after a couple of times because it wore him out.

But anyway, swapping in modern Chevy parts would make one pretty cool.
