Are they later year burbs the red headed stepchildren?

I am a 73-87 lover! BUT, in my opinion you can not beat the 92-99 GM trucks for a number of reasons, ride, drive, reliability and if taken care of last forever! I currently have a 98 ex cab/sb 454 K2500 with 58K on it and a 95 2 door tahoe that I use as a DD it will be getting lifted 4" and 33's to DD and play.

Personally I like the reliability of the TBI's but, the 96+ steer easier because they have a sensor that controls P/S pump pressure.

92-94 TBI old dash
95 TBI new dash
96-99 new dash, air bags driver and passenger, Vortec engines.

My 95 tahoe gets 12mpg in town and my truck with a vortec 454 gets 10. For the relatively small mileage difference I would get the BB IMO.
 
Gotta say I love the square body trucks. I have had several square bodies over the years. BUT riding in and driving a newer model is a whole other world. If I was buying a daily driver to use for work all day long I would go with a 92+
 
Here's how I see it. The newer Suburbans are very nice to ride in and haul the family in too. BUT, I bought my 88 Sub for $1500 and it's in pretty good shape for being 24 years old. Parts are dirt cheap and the only diagnostic tool I need is a paperclip.

I already have a solid front axle which most offroaders want and eventually swap into place. And I don't feel too bad for scratching up older sheet metal if and when I take it hunting or cruise down a fire road. I have almost all of the creature comforts of a newer rig, (A/C, power mirrors, locks and windows), and I still get 15-16mpg's on the highway hauling my wife, 3 year old daughter, soon to be born son/daughter, dog and all of our gear.

If I were forced to choose between a newer Suburban or an older one in good shape, I would choose the older one simply because I want a do-all, be-all vehicle that can take it's lumps and still get me home. If I were just buying a highway traveller, hands down the 95-present Suburban would be my choice.
 
Took my DD car in for some repairs. Guess what loaner they gave me...hahaha coincidence?

Wouldn't buy one, Im not into the fancy stuff.... but it sure does ride nice.

1995 has the best dash in my opinion. The '92 - '94 have the squared off dash that I think is hideous. I do not want a passenger airbag that came in '96. The 1995 has the nice flat deck in front of the passenger.

That being said, the Vortec is a nice motor.

I think 96' is identical to the 95', 97 is the passenger airbag.
 
i just picked up a 93 for $600.it has 172,000,no radio,needed the 4-wheel drive actuator and was bone stock.no power windows/locks, but did have a/c.old couple had it for the last 10 years and my buddy did all the maintience to it.i love it!13 mpg and all i have to do change the oil!more time to work on the k5!
 
I love my 89. It has all the options I need and any others are easy after market upgrades. I like interior space and visibility better in the old body style the best. I had no complaints about the tbi motor before it croaked but since I've revived it visualy I'd love to update it under the hood with an ls engine.
