I am changing the head gaskets on my 1982 6.2 GMC Jimmy. One of my friends mentioned using ARP bolts. Do I need these? The shop that did the machine work said I should be able to reuse the bolts that I took off (OEM bolts). Also what is the normal wear a non-turbo 6.2 can get (how many miles). When should I do a total engine rebuild. Is there any checks I can do to see if my glow plugs and my injectors are Okay?

The factory bolts are not reusable. They are torque to yield bolts and stretch when you go through the tightening sequence. The ARP studs are marginally more expensive then the head bolts but are reusable and supposedly clamp more evenly.

Did you have the heads surfaced? Felpro makes head gaskets just for that application they are like .010 thicker.

Best way to check wear on the engine is probably a compression check once you get it back together. how many miles are on it?

Do a search dude, all you questions have been answered in great detail over and over again. If you can't find the answer after searching, it doesn't make sense or isn't clear then ask...i think you hit every newbie diesel owner question in one post.

I used the ARP studs and the Fel-pro gaskets when I did the head gaskets on my '83 this past summer. Well worth it IMO, the ARP studs are amazing quality and definitely provide more clamping force and more even clamping. During disassembly I noticed a couple of the factory TTY bolts on the passenger side of my 6.2 did not seem as 'tight' as the rest of them. i suspect they were a little overstretched and eventually weren't able to provide enough clamp force to keep the gasket from going.

300,000 miles isn't out of the question for a well maintained 6.2. The 6.2 in my '81 Jimmy still runs well, doesn't smoke and has about 239,000 on it.

Hey Buffy!
When did you get a diesel in that thing? Or is this a different blazer than your white one?

DC sucks, BTW...

Sorry to hijack.
