Hey that's a pretty cool looking trailer... But I think I would be better off trying to rent something down here. Thanks for the thought though... /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I used to work w/ a body man that was a freakin genious fixing cars, but he couldnt read. So needless to say he couldnt take the tests.

How could he be a genius fixing cars if he can't even read a service manual or a scan tool?

Maybe you should read what you're replying to. He was talking about a "BODY MAN". Body work is a art not a science. Either you're an Artist or you're not. /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Re: ASE Certified Jerks!

I don't think you are right by bashing ASE it is not their fault you got screwed by this guy they are just a testing sevice anyone who pays their money can take the test, and they are are very expensive to take @ $150.00 each. ASE cannot control peoples morals ASE is to help the consumer know that the technician knows everything about that certain area and their is test for every area which is something you want to check. Just because he says he is ASE certified ask in what fields. He may be certified in doing oil changes and not major overhauls. Some shops get the easiest certification just so they can say they are certified, these test are very difficult Ive nown guys that wheir very knowelgable and could not pass these. My dad is a master ASE tech and I have 2 of the 3 levels of NGA certification which is the same level as ASE except in glass only. These are very good programs for making sure the techs are on their toes. One thing you should always do is check refrences as many as possible. I do alot of work on old cars like street rods, muscle cars and restoration stuff and always provide my customers with refrences. just my .02

Re: ASE Certified Jerks!

I kind of read through the post half asssed, you said you pressure checked the radiator, That proves the radiator isn't leaking. Did you test the cooling line that's inside the radiator? The radiator will perform its job. But if the tranny cooler line is leaking then its gonna mix fluids. And antifreeze is a horrible lubricant. I'm not hard assing you, I've had a few mechanics try to take me for a ride. But if you're gonna ride this guy, BE SURE you have your ducks in a row! Good Luck either way!

Re: ASE Certified Jerks!

What 70 K5 said. There are no books to read, scanners to program ETC. W/ body work either you can or you cant. Its not just changing parts.

I quit doing body work just a month ago, and went back to work for my dad at the shop he owns turning wrenches, and havent been happier. (I hated doing body work for a living) Made killer money, but was I ever miserable. I still like to do B/W and paint but I just dont like to do it for a living.

Re: ASE Certified Jerks!

I grew up in a body shop and did it for almost 10 years after high school before I switched to doing glass. I don't know what kind of body shop you just quite working at but most I've seen read alot of service manuals such as parts books and time labor guides and most importantly frame measurements and as far as scan tools since OBD and OBD11 every thing is computer controled from air bag replacement to lighting systems. modern cars are very complicated and that includes paint & body work

Re: ASE Certified Jerks!

Oh I agree. I did it for 13 yrs. It is way technical. I didnt get into reading the labor guides, thats what we have management for, let THEM do the leg work. All I did was tell them I need this, and they would take care of it. Then the parts guy would get it and bring it to me.

I would do all the nuts and bolts type stuff on wrecks (mechanical wise) but if it required anything computerized scanning or anything like that I would hand off to service. Why should I bang my head against the wall trying to figure out something that another guy knows better? Cant make money unless your making progress.

As far as measuring goes it was all computerized. I have used the old sheets and tram gauge and a measuring tape quite a bit tho.

My biggest point I guess was that there is no books or tech sheets to tell you how to repair a wreck. Either you can or you cant. You have to have a knack for it.

BTW I worked in dealerships. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

| Did you test the cooling line that's inside the radiator? |

Yes I did... It's fine. I tested it up to 40 pounds and no leaks. I don't think the transmission is puting out that kind of pressure. I found out that they only put out 5 to 15 pounds. Also I had the fluid in the transmission tested and there was only water in it... no coolant... In the radiator there was transmission fluid, a whole bunch of it along with the coolant and water. My mix at the time was 70 percent because I was living in the snow. But please remember this...

I checked the tranny fluid just before it went on the tow truck and it was a nice translucent red. And the radiator fluid was a nice green... The van was not driven after that. It was pulled up on the flatbed tow truck by a wingh and then transported to the tranny shop. When I took the van back the tranny was WAY OVER FULL but not when it left me. So you tell me how that stuff got there???????????

Re: ASE Certified Jerks!

I don't doubt you in the least! Sounds like a serious ****up on the mechanics part. I would get the police involved myself. A cover up is a cover up. Sounds like your getting ripped for a ton of money.

Re: ASE Certified Jerks!

I have no doubt in my mind that you got screwed just leave the ASE part out, they have nothing to do with it. their is alot of us that work hard to gain that certification and we are not all crocked /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: ASE Certified Jerks!

Fulltop has a good point. Yeah you were screwed, royally, but ASE has/had nothing to do with it.

As I have said above, I have worked w/ great techs that cant pass a test, and I have worked w/ total hacks or idiots that cant do what the test says they supposedly can.

Word of mouth. Best way to find a good shop. Bottom line.
