I saw your post and since I'm in the process of gutting my interior, I went and pulled my ashtray out. The 4 screws is all that holds it in. It doesn't fit out between the dash and HVAC (or at least you'd have to scratch the dickens out of it.). It comes out quite easily through the glovebox hole, though. You may or may not have to remove the courtesy lamp holder. Mine was already out.
Although I wonder if you could unbolt the center brace bar from the bottom of the dash to the firewall and then flex the lower dash enough to slip it out of the bottom.
With AC there is a hvac box behind and to the side of the glove box so no go that way either.
I wanted to get behind the AC controls as the light bulb came out of the AC controls, I ended up taking out the stereo and was able to plug it back in, what a pain. So no longer need to take out the ashtray. Thanks guys.
Yeah, I'm working on an A/C truck. What I'm saying is you can remove the glove box, which just takes a minute and then you have a path for the ashtray.
I also confirmed that unbolting that bottom brace lets you flex the dash metal out enough you can clear the ashtray.
