:haha: No $hit.

That being said, it would be easy to pickup a used electric oven for the garage (or backyard) if you were going to be doing much powder coating.

Besides that, I haven't used any of those systems. Craftsman has one too.

When we did our kitchen remodel a year ago I kept my old stove for just that purpose. Haven't got around the buying the powder coat system yet though

If your serious about doing your own powder coating. Look on craigslist for Convection oven. You need a oven that circulates the air. Otherwise you may get hotspots on the part. this will look like shiny and dull looking spots and possibly not fully cured spots.

Thank you, Good to know. That type of oven must be costly.

Thank you,

Ed

not too bad really. I just about scored a pair from a church that we about 6" wider and deeper then normal one for 200 for the pair. but snoozed on it.

hmmm, did not know about a convection oven... I'd never heard that before...

I was gonna check into an electric oven for the garage in 2 weeks when I go over to my local refurbed appliance guy for a new washer and dryer after Sandy ate em...

Yeah convection ovens are "higher end" ovens new, but when they hit CL they are pretty much the same price across the board.

Take a look at actual curing ovens for professionals and you will find they have a fan in there that circulates the air.

When you get right down to it, a convection oven is just an oven with a fan.
It might blow the air over the heating element, or in a special pattern to maximize even heating, but its still just a fan.

If you are using a junker oven anyway, it should not be too hard to rig a metal blade fan in it.
Drill a small hole, mount the fan inside on a long shaft with the motor back away from the side of the oven.
If you could find a couple of aluminum fan blades to fit that shaft also, you could bend the blades flat, clamp them on the shaft between the oven and the motor, and they would wick the heat away before it gets to the motor.

The fan blade inside could be aluminum or steel, just not plastic............

Like he said!

You just need to make sure the air flows evenly inside. If all the air goes to just one side you could actually make the hot or cold spots worse.

Any thoughts on the heating lights for the curing process, I’ve seen them advertised with the powder kits.

Ive got a pair of M/T valve covers a guy I used to work with powdercoated for me. I think he used the eastwood kit, and they turned out great. Havent put them on anything yet though. Been over 5 years.:doah:

I've powder coated probably 50 parts and have been very happy with the results with my Eastwood kit.
