ATF consumption. My th400 is consuming alot of tranny fluid but there is nothing apparently really dripping off the belly of my 87 Suburban. It has gone through 3 quarts in the last couple weeks. Today I noticed some grey smoke from the exhaust that smells like cooking ATF. Is it possible that I'm vacuming ATF through the vacume connection thing on the side of the transmission, and if so, would it be fixable by replacing that part?:confused:

have you checked the level in your transfer case it might be leaking into the transfer case which would leave no signs on the under side

BINGO! Pull the vacuum hose off of the modulator (thing on the tranny) and see if the hose has fluid in it (it should not). Easy fix. :thumb:

mine never seemed to drip when it was sitting when I drove it, it then would drip onto the exhaust and get baked off. Couldn't really find where it was coming from so I replaced the tranny pan gasket and have had no more problems.

I just ordered a new modulator. The smoke and the 6 quarts of atf lead me that way. $22 at checker. Autozone said it's unavailable:dunno:

Yeah the vacume line was full of atf when I pulled it off. I replaced the modulater and it's working fine now. Now my other burb is giving me trouble:(
