It's another ride? :dunno:

Anyhoo. Bought a quad almost a month ago. Ran like crap, cleaned it, adjusted. Runs just about great. Got my carb rebuild kit in a week ago, and few more misc parts that were missing today and rebuilt it. 99.9% is runs great.

Except it will die as soon as you open the choke. It's been in the part choke position since I bought it, riding that way, and it idles great, off-idle is great, part throttle is great, WOT is great. Before I bought the kit I had slight vacuum issues, so I had the pilot jet turned out further than it should have been (4.5 instead of 2.5 that it should be) just to get rid of the off idle stumble issues due to the vacuum leaks. Ran great like that. So rebuilt it, everything is adjusted fine, no leaks, runs great.

But won't run w/o the choke pulled part out. It's clean, no blockage, adjusted right. Now it came with a new needle. So I checked the old one, it's adjustable, the top of the needle has 5 grooves to adjust lean/rich. It was at the very top groove, which is most lean setting. Book says stock is in the middle (3rd grove), I put the new one there, and ran super rich. So put it where it was (top groove), and all is well again. Spark plug looks fine, exhaust is clear.

No friggin idea, EXCEPT MAYBE, there's o-rings, a spring and the choke pull screws into the body of the carb, and there's a plastic boot thing isn't nice and snug around the shaft the knob is connected. But even so that part shouldn't have air or fuel passing by it, as the base of this knob is what goes into the carb body where all the orings and things are.

I mean, really, leave well enough alone, it rides great. Just erks me.

Oh, it's an 89 Yamaha Big Bear 350 4x4 with auto clutch. Signed up at one atv forum, it's dead there, signed up at another, seemed better, but it's dead there too. And they mostly have newer stuff, and aren't very 'techy'.

never truly needed a rebuild kit for sport carbs.

just good cleaning and brake cleaner for clearing out ports/ passages.

also shop compressed air with rubber tip blow gun. but wats you don't blow soming out and have to go find it.

also cutting tourch cleaner brush set for clearing gunk from the jets . but don't go crazy as you can bore the jet out and screw it up .

and slow idel jet's get clogged the most as smallest jet. I have fixed so many of them from just this jet clogged .

and try like hell to stay away from ethenal mix gas. if you can get race gas low octane so you don't need to rejet for full race gas.

best mod I ever did to my 2stroke quad was race gas.

It's a 4 stroke, utility atv. Did it NEED a rebuild kit?... meh, for some reasons. The needle was letting gas dribble out of the overflow. Kit came with the carb to boot o-ring, which was once source of my vacuum leak, the float bowl gasket really needed a replacement. The pilot screw was missing a metal washer and oring. And there was another jet thing that was corroded. $25 seemed like good insurance.

I used carb clean and an air compressor. Didn't let anything soak, but if air blows through, figured I was good.

I paid 10$ for Lucas Ethanol mix that is supposed to keep the ethanol gas from gunking up and eating rubber lines. the first tank in my 2 stroke polaris it hated it wouldn't run WOT wouldn't idle but that's due to other issues but now it runs great! There are several different brands out there for the ethanol fuel treatments.

I don't know if this will help you or not. But I was looking for some info on my ATV last week and ran across this thread: http://www.suzukiatvforums.com/forums/suzuki-kingquad/1295-2000-kq-stalling.html

It discusses some of the things you've mentioned. So I thought maybe it would give you some ideas. The early '00 Suzukis were still pretty low-tech. Maybe some of the info will relate to your '89. :dunno:

Good luck.

Your 89 is more than likely exactly like my old '03 warrior 350. I'm not sure if they had the 4 valve head on those or the 2 valve head like my warrior. I think the wolverines got the 4 valve, but the rest is almost identical.

Quick question (cause I'd rather do this on my desktop)

Is there a white plastic piece, kinda round, held to the carb with 2 or 3 screws? Behind it would be a plunger and diaphragm. Just wondering if the carb is the same as my Mikuni (sp?)

Snoozer- thanks, I'll read over it tomorrow, it's about bed time

K85 Octane - yeah mine has that same thing. It's a mikuni as well
