Stepped up and got a Auto Darkening Welding Helmet today all I can say is wow. I'd like to get all the time back wasted trying to strike a bead "in the dark" with regular helmet. The new helmet also provides the the illusion that I can actually weld:haha:

They are nice,I use mine when I am tacking up parts and shells, but when I do a lot of continuous welding I go back to my old standard paper hood, just so much lighter :)

The newer ones are light. I also had an insert cartridge in my old helmet, used an AAA battery and snapped in the standard lens opening.

I can't imagine going back to the old style!!! :D

Seriously? I thought the only place people used fixed helmets was on construction job sites because they dont break if you drop them 30 ft. Theres only been one time in my life Ive ever welded with a fixed shade helmet and it was miserable.

I'm old.. I did for decades... not a big deal, just a nod and it's down... but I've loved my Miller elite the last decade, been flawless...

tho I have a magnifying lense I wanna stick in there when I start doing my tubebed to see how I like it... never used one before...

Yah I need to upgrade my hood soon. I have an old lincoln auto darkening but its the small 2x4 viewing.

By "striking a bead" are you actually still using a buzz box? Going from a buzz box to a mig changed my life!

I keep my old fixed shade as back up....We have a long history together and it's never let down....That being said....I won't miss it that much.
